Mizuki is perhaps most famous for his earlier performances: the opening theme songs of the Go Nagai animated television series Mazinger Z, Leiji Matsumoto's Space Pirate Captain Harlock and Tatsunoko Productions' Tekkaman: The Space Knight — Mazinger Z will later give birth to the Super Robot genre of anime that dominated the Japanese television landscape of the 1970s.
On July 19, 2000, he formed (with fellow anison vocalists Hironobu Kageyama, Masaaki Endoh, Eizo Sakamoto, and Rika Matsumoto) the "supergroup" JAM Project. (Effective August 2002, he has since reduced his formal status in this group to "part-time member" and now focuses on producing both the group and up-and-coming talent.)
His most recent performance was STORMBRINGER, the opening of Kotetsushin Jeeg (as part of JAM Project). Fittingly enough, Kotetsushin Jeeg is a sequel to Kotetsu Jeeg, an anime which Mizuki sang the opening theme for.

The lyrics of 水木一郎's song 鋼鉄ジーグのうた revolves around the story of the anime series "Steel Jeeg." The song begins with the singer challenging others to take up his cause, as he warns that the primitive "Haniwa Humans" will face extinction if he stops. He then encourages his sentient fusion robot, Steel Jeeg, to run, brandishing its big shooter and performing a build-up to unleash its power.
The second verse requests that the singer's father watch as he takes up his mission to fight the evil Hymika Clan, and boldly preaches that they too will face extinction in the face of his powerful robot's Knuckle Bomber. The build-up is repeated, and this time we see Steel Jeeg using its weapons to defeat the obstacles of the Build Base Kingdom's defenses, as the singer again invigorates Steel Jeeg to advance forward, wielding its science-powered Spin Storm attack.
