The lyrics to 譚詠麟's song 心經 are adapted from the Heart Sutra, which is a key text in Mahayana Buddhism. The Heart Sutra is a short, but powerful scripture that revolves around the concept of emptiness or shunyata. The sutra begins with Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva of compassion, who is asked by the monk Shariputra about the nature of emptiness. Avalokiteshvara responds by stating that all things are ultimately empty of inherent existence or self-nature. He then proceeds to outline the famous formula "form is emptiness; emptiness is form," which means that all appearances, including our own identities and experiences, are ultimately lacking in any independent existence, and are thus empty in nature.
The lyrics of 心經 describe the concept of emptiness or shunyata in a poetic, evocative way. They emphasize that all phenomena are ultimately empty, including the five skandhas or aggregates (form, sensation, perception, mental formations, and consciousness), which constitute our subjective experience of the world. The lyrics also touch upon the idea of non-duality or non-separation, which means that ultimate reality is not divided into separate, independent entities, but is rather a unity that embraces all things.
Overall, the lyrics of 心經 convey the profound insight of Mahayana Buddhism into the nature of reality and the illusory nature of the self. They remind us that all things are ultimately empty and that true liberation can be attained only by penetrating the veil of illusion that clouds our minds and recognizing the ultimate nature of reality.
