Tiny Sparrow
Aretha Franklin Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Come all you fair and tender maiden
Be careful how you love your men
They're like the stars on a summer's mornin'
First they'll appear and then they're gone

If only I were a tiny sparrow
And I had wings and could fly so high
I'd fly to my false lover
There I'd stay 'til he loved like I

But as I am no tiny sparrow
And have no wings so I can't fly
Away to love somebody

Weep and pass my troubles by
Weep and pass my troubles by

Overall Meaning

In "Tiny Sparrow," Aretha Franklin sings about the cautionary tale of love and the fleeting nature of relationships. The lyrics start with a warning to young women, advising them to be careful in how they love men. The analogy of men being compared to stars on a summer's morning represents their transient nature. Just like stars that shine brightly at first and then fade away, men can enter one's life with intensity and passion but leave just as quickly.

The second part of the song expresses the singer's longing for a different situation. She wishes she could be a tiny sparrow with wings to fly high and reach her false lover, hoping that his love for her would be as true as hers is for him. However, she acknowledges her own limitations and the impossibility of this wish. As she cannot transform into a sparrow and lacks wings to fly, she is unable to escape her troubles through love. Instead, she must cope with her feelings through weeping and finding a way to pass her troubles by.

Overall, "Tiny Sparrow" is a poignant reflection on the transitory nature of love and the limitations that prevent the singer from escaping the pain caused by an unrequited love.

Just bought the Columbia box set that contains all of Aretha's albums she recorded for that label from 1960-1966 before she moved to the Atlantic label. "Tiny Sparrow" is from one of the CDs in the box set and it just blew me away. One of the best in the entire set. I had to check out YouTube to see if there was any chance that somebody had a video of the song and I can't believe I found something! Thank you so much!!
