This is my all-time favourite Chopin polonaise and a good performance from a great Chopin interpreter Artur Rubinstein, and he`s still my all-time favourite pianist for me.

I have yet to find a pianist whose playing of Chopin's Polonaises I enjoy more than Rubinstein's. It is obviously a totally personal appreciation.

The middle section of op 44 is brilliant. The stubborn build up marches into this carefree, delicate, and light place.

It is one of the most difficult Chopin Polonaise songs, and it is difficult to sing the entire Chopin song. It's one of Chopin's best minor tunes, which goes one step further from the 40-2 polonaise just before it, and has a more tragic atmosphere.

To listen to Chopin and to listen to Horowitz are two different things. While Horowitz's playing is amazing, it should be enjoyed in less transcendental music. To hear Chopin, there are few better choices than the playing of Rubinstein. He is not always my top choice, but he is never far from it. In this composition, I find his playing excellent and much more authentic than Horowitz's.

I just flipped to this set of comments. The (3) top Pianists of the 20th century were undoubtedly (1) Rubinstein, (2) Horowitz, and (3) Iturbi. You can't top these (3) Geniuses, not only for their breadth of the Majority of the Composers from the Baroque, Romantic - Post-Chopin eras, Schubert, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, etc. They covered all of them. Now there may be some comments or opinions about this one plays from the romantic heart, of expression, dynamics, speed, slower pace, sure with all of them crossing over each other - with more than a dozen composers - covering the ENTIRE CLASSICAL map from Bach to Rachmaninoff. I don't think that one of us as Pianists, Critics, Musicologists, or present day composers, CAN 'HOLD A CANDLE' TO ANY OF THESE CLASSICAL GENIUSES? I THINK NOT. Where we could 'tear down' Rubinstein for lack of expression or emotion', and PUFF UP Horowitz for his opposite styles, so actually, we could do a similar downgrade to Horowitz, and upgrade Rubinstein. I just thank God that we had all (3) of these men - to manhandle the whole 20th century as the EXPERTS. All of the rest only played 20-25 years at the end of the century, and have carried the baton to the 21st century - How about some of these: Serkin, Cliburn, Ashkenazy, Schiff, Argerich, Uchida, Barenboim and many more. I think we should be thankful for the many pianists we have, who have led us into the 21st Century.
LET ME ADD more GENIUS - The TOP 21st Century Pianist - from Baroque turned to Rag Time Piano (Joplin) - is Dr. Joshua Rifkin himself!! Dr. Rifkin has transformed Scott Joplins (80) compositions and brought them out of the Grave of John Stark (Joplin's publicist) to the movie 'The Sting' in 1973 and onward from then - He is the Master of RagTime music for almost 40 years. Imagine - TRANSFORMING JOPLIN's Bar & Nightclub Studio Grand pianos (Rarely Joplin played on a Grand Piano). Now Dr. Rifkin plays & recorded these on 9 ft. Concert Grand Pianos. If Joplin saw Rifkin play his music today - He would probably cry. Actually, although Joplin was famous for Maple Leaf Rag, and The Entertainer, HIS most advanced RAG Music pieces were Gladiolus Rag, and Fig Leaf Rag - Try the link for these pieces, with Joshua Rifkin as the pianist. Awesome
