Aterciopelados, whose name translates as "The Velvety Ones," was formed by former members of Delia Y Los Aminoacidos -- Andrea Echeverri, who plays acoustic guitar and sings lead, and Héctor Buitrago, who plays bass guitar. The original drummer Andres Giraldo* was replaced by Alejandro Duque in 1995 and the original guitar player Charlie Marquez was replaced by Alejandro Gomez Caceras in 1997. Also, lead singer Andrea Echeverri was chosen by Gustavo Cerati to sing "En la Ciudad de la Furia" for Soda Stereo's MTV Unplugged album.
Andrés Giraldo was also part of the Bogotá based band Bloque de Busqueda, known for their mix of artisan / folkloric music with a modern twist full of prominent beats.
Echeverri came out with a self-titled solo album in 2004, "Aemeo" is the lead song in this album.
The band recieved Grammy award nominations in 1997 and 1998.
In October of 2006 they released the album Oye, just a couple of months after Héctor Buitrago came out with his Conhector first solo album.

The song "El Dorado" by Aterciopelados tells a story about a treasure that is being kept hidden from the world. The singer talks about how the treasure is carefully guarded and kept away from any potential threats. The tone of the song is cautious and secretive, as the singer makes references to people who have tried to steal the treasure but have failed to find it. The singer is determined to keep the treasure safe and secure, and reminds the listeners that it is not a common precious item that anyone can recognize or steal easily.
The repeated refrain stating "No es morado, no, no es rosado, no, no es plateado, no, no es jaspeado, no" reinforces the idea that the treasure is not what people expect it to be. The treasure is unique and precious in its own way, but it is not something that people can immediately recognize and value. The verses that follow, detailing how people have ruined, stolen, and killed for similar items, add to the importance and weight of the treasure that the singer is guarding. Overall, the song is about the importance of protecting the things that are dear to us, even if they may not be immediately valuable or recognizable to others.
