To the detractors: Music is not science, nor must it meet any standard of "perfection". It is art, and it is the most emotionally moving art form. This album is a good example of why Streisand is so popular - she makes the music resonate at a deep emotional level with many people who hear her sing. It can't be defined or quantified, the listener either is moved or not, and that is all. I for one am deeply moved by this performance and have been for 40 years now.
p.s. on the album cover Leonard Bernstein says "Barbra Streisand's natural ability to make music takes her over to the classical field with extraordinary ease. It's clear that she loves these songs. In her sensitive, straight-forward, and enormously appealing performance, she has given us a very special musical experience"

I agree with you Papasmurf1946. This is almost exactly how I feel when the naysayers start analyzing voices like Leontyne Price's with absolutes. I prefer Streisand doing other things but I like this.

Lets get this quite straight. When Streisand produced the album of classical songs,
she never pretended to be anything but Barbra Streisand the singer NOT a classically
trained singer. She probably knew she would be in for a bit of "stick". for doing it.
Therefore, listening to it from that perspective it is at least a fair and sincere attempt.

@24 Hr Fake Gnus I am a classically trained singer - began 'classical' voice lessons at age 14, studied with an Alumni of Eastman, and then Julliard. At the age of 15 though, vocal chords are not mature enough to technically achieve the purist form of classical singing (the vocal chords mature around age 21). My high school choir made a recording of Carmina Burana when I was a Sophomore (age 15) and our Choir Director assigned me the Dolcissime solo. It went well...thank goodness...I am a Coloratura. I love the clarity and pure tone that Barbara uses when singing this. Her natural gift of interpreting music, a beautiful voice and professional musicianship shines here.

I am a classically trained musician. Streisand has, in my estimate, done quality work here. Some of her interpretations may be slightly better than others but she clearly put a great deal of time and effort into preparing.this. She has done an excellent job overall.
Her work here holds up alongside many of the big name classical music oerformers. And I Iisten to many of the big names in classical music: Marilyn Horne, Renee Fleming, Sarah Brightman, Bryn Terfel. Luciano Pavarotti, Joyce DiDonato, Maria Callas, Jose Carreras etc.
Classical wasn't Streisand's specialty but she met the challenge with considerable professionalism. She is to be congratulated for her fine work.

The thing to do is to listen to several versions of TRUTINA at the same time. Of course the great opera singer Renee Fleming gives the ideal operatic rendition. But as is with ALL the music that she creates, once again STREISAND makes this song, and the entire CLASSICAL album her own. When you partake of the STREISAND mystique, you go for the experience that is HER, moreso than the songs. That is how you must digest, perhaps, one of the 3 greatest artist of the 20th century or all time that has come so far! 💞💞💞
