Brian Wilson
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive
Call it insane
But when I'm surrounded I just can't stop

It's a matter of instinct
It's a matter of conditioning and a matter of fact
You can call me Pavlov's Dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate
How'd you like that?
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue

'Cause right now I'm lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did

So I'm lying here
Just staring at the ceiling tiles
And I'm thinking about, oh what to think about
Just listening and relistening
To Smiley Smile
And I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought

Because I'm lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am Lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did, whoa

And if you want to find me
I'll be out in the sandbox
Just wondering where the hell all the love has gone
I'm playing my guitar and building
Castles in the sun, oh oh oh
And singing "Fun, Fun, Fun"

Lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did, whoa

I had a dream
That I was three hundred pounds
And though I was very heavy
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Somebody, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me

Because I'm lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did
Well I am lying in bed
Just like Brian Wilson did, yeah

Drove downtown in the rain
Nine-thirty on a Tuesday night
Just to check out the late-night record shop
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive
You can call it insane, oh oh

But when I'm surrounded
I just can't stop

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barenaked Ladies' song "Brian Wilson" tell the story of the band's lead singer, Steven Page, who drives downtown on a rainy Tuesday night to visit a record store. He describes how he feels impelled to visit the shop and says that he can't stop himself when he's in its midst. He then likens his behavior to that of Pavlov's dog, implying that his compulsion to buy music is conditioned.

As he lies in bed, he thinks about the great Beach Boys songwriter Brian Wilson, who famously suffered from mental illness and spent a lot of time in bed during the 1960s. The singer is listening to the Beach Boys' Smile album when he considers whether he is experiencing creative blockage, as Brian Wilson is rumored to have done. The lyrics then turn to the activities of the singer, who is building castles in the sun and singing songs from the Beach Boys' catalogue.

The closing verse is a surrealistic dream sequence in which Page imagines himself as a 300-pound man floating above the ground. He says he was so light that he couldn't feel the ground beneath him, and he calls out for help.

The song "Brian Wilson," which was inspired by the legendary music producer and his influence on the band's music, was written by Steven Page and Ed Robertson. Page later said that the song was about being a fan and being obsessed with music.

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night,
just to check out the late-night record shop.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane;
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.

It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning,
It's a matter of fact.
You can call me Pavlov's dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate- how'd you like that?
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue,
cause right now I'm

[Chorus]
Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.

So I'm lying here, just staring at the ceiling tiles.
and I'm thinking about what to think about.
Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile,
and I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
because I am

[Chorus]

And if you want to find me I'll be out in the sandbox,
wondering where the hell all the love has gone.
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun,
and singing "Fun, Fun, Fun."

[Chorus]

I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds
and though I was very heavy,
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me because I'm

[Chorus]

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night.
Just to check out the late-night record shop.
Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane;
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.

Fun fact: Brian Wilson likes this song, and even played it live several times in the late 90s/early 2000s.

@jamesmiller22

Fun fact Brian Wilson suffered with clinical depression, spent some time in hotel 🛏 interrupted beach Boys ture

@DukeNukem1

That’s true…another fun fact the record store he mentions at the beginning is Sam the record man

@magicAlonso1414

@James Miller wouldn't call that a "fun" fact. It's interesting but depression is complex. Especially when your dad deafens you with a 2 x 4.

@daspoohmunich7235

i ate with BNL at John Anderson Burgers back in the 80s polite clean acceptable smell class act all around ha Brian Wilson 🎈

@CuredStash

@@jamesmiller22 this is true and typical of every musician. Music is emotions. Except this dog shit they make now. That’s to control emotions.

His voice is so haunting. This band is highly underrated. I saw them in concert in 2011. I was blown away.
