Hanukkah
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Oh, Hanukkah, Oh, Hanukkah
Come light the menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather round the table, we'll give you a treat
Sevivonim to play with and lakes to eat

And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago

Oh, Hanukkah, Oh, Hanukkah
Come light the menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather round the table, we'll give you a treat
Sevivonim to play with and lakes to eat

And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago

Oh, Hanukkah, Oh, Hanukkah
Come light the menorah
Let's have a party
We'll all dance the hora
Gather round the table, we'll give you a treat
Sevivonim to play with and lakes to eat

And while we are playing
The candles are burning low
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago
One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago

One for each night, they shed a sweet light
To remind us of days long ago

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Barenaked Ladies’ β€œHanukkah” song celebrate the Jewish festival of Hanukkah, which is also known as the Festival of Lights. The song encourages festive celebration, dancing and enjoying tasty food around the table with friends and family. The menorah is a candelabrum with nine branches that are lit over the course of the holiday, one candle each night for eight nights, with the ninth candle serving as the β€œshammash” or helper candle used to light the others. This is referenced in the lyrics where it says, β€œOne for each night, they shed a sweet light.”

The sevivonim mentioned in the song are a traditional Hanukkah game played with a spinning top, where each face of the top is imprinted with a Hebrew letter that forms an acronym for the Hebrew phrase, β€œa great miracle happened here.” This phrase refers to the miraculous event of a single night’s worth of oil in the Temple lasting eight nights, which is the origin of the holiday of Hanukkah.

Overall, the Barenaked Ladies’ β€œHanukkah” song is a joyful song that celebrates the traditions and festivities of the holiday. It is a reminder to gather together, light the menorah, play games, and enjoy the company of loved ones and the sweetness of the holiday.

This is such a great album. Every single song. I especially love that they brought in fellow Canadian singers Sarah McLachlan and Michael BublΓ©. Sarah's voice on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen/We Three Kings"Β’ is absolutely gorgeous.

I love that they included some Hanukkah songs as a couple of the members of the band are Jewish and surely millions of their fans.

Sarah Palmer

I love this Hanukah song so much! It’s literally the best one I’ve ever heard!

Leaving a Chinese take out restaurant in Southold,NY, I heard this song, as the sun was setting, on WLNG radio on the first night of Hanukah. This is how I celebrated Hanukah this year at age 70- by chance catching this song which I had never heard before, on the radio. This was my Hanukah celebration, it's so easy for me to forget after years of estrangement and bitter disappointment. But the song made it for me this year. Thanks!
