The history of Everything
Barenaked Ladies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state
Then nearly fourteen-billion years ago expansion started, wait
The Earth began to cool
The autotrophs began to drool
Neanderthals developed tools
We built a wall (We built the pyramids)
Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery
That all started with the big bang
Bang!

Since "The Dawn of Man" is really not that long
As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song
A fraction of a second and the elements were made
The bipeds stood up straight
The dinosaurs all met their fate
They tried to leap but they were late
And they all died (They froze their asses off)
The oceans and Pangaea
See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya
Set in motion by the same big bang
It all started with the big bang!

It's expanding ever outward but one day
It will pause, then start to go the other way
Collapsing ever inward, we won't be here, it won't be heard
Our best and brightest figure: that it'll make an even bigger bang!

Australopithecus would really have been sick of us
Debating how we're here, they're catching deer (We're catching viruses)
Religion or astronomy, Encarta, Deuteronomy
It all started with the big bang!

Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology

It all started with the big bang
It all started with the big bang!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Barenaked Ladies' "The History of Everything" are a condensed summary of the history of the universe, from the moment of the Big Bang to the present day. The song is a tribute to the scientific understanding of how the universe has evolved and an acknowledgment of the challenges and struggles humans have faced in our brief existence.

The song begins with a reference to the Big Bang theory, which proposes that the universe began as a hot, dense state and has been expanding ever since. The Earth then began to cool, leading to the development of autotrophs, or organisms that can produce their own food. This eventually led to the development of Neanderthals who were the first human species to develop tools. The lyrics then mention the building of the pyramid, which is a nod to the human capacity for engineering marvels.

The lyrics then move on to how math, science, and history have allowed us to unravel the mysteries of our universe. The second verse discusses the idea that the history of the universe is compressed into a relatively short period of time. The lyrics reference the fact that the first galaxies formed quickly, and the elements were created within fractions of a second. The dinosaurs, who dominated the planet for millions of years, became extinct because of the shifting climate. From there, the song moves into the future and how the universe is expanding, with the suggestion that it will one day collapse inward, eventually leading to another big bang.

Overall, "The History of Everything" is a tribute to human understanding and an acknowledgment of the mysteries that remain. The lyrics suggest that while we have come a long way, there is still much to learn about how the universe functions and the role that humans play in it.
