Rather than singing in English, as is common practice among Dutch bands, BLØF produces songs in their native Dutch, vastly contributing to the popularization of Nederpop, as the genre has been known in the Netherlands..
Besides having deeply sensitive lyrics, BLØF incorporates sounds from around the world. Their hit song Aanzoek zonder ringen (Proposal without rings) uses Japanese kodo drums in the background, while their album, Umoja, was the result of a journey around the world to capture multi-national sounds.
Critics claim that their formula for success is the way they crafted songs; they try to find the ideal balance between alternative and popular rock, poetic lyrics, and the voice of Paskal Jakobsen. This has brought BLØF the hits, awards, airplay, and (inter-)national recognition that has propelled these four musicians into the most successful Dutch-language group in recent years.
Besides success, BLØF has also had its fair share of tragedy. Drummer Chris Götte, who replaced Henk Tjoonk in 1997, died in a motor crash on March 17th, 2001. When the news got out, the Bløf website was filled with condolences from fans and friends. In June, the band released a memorial album called Oog In Oog (Eye to eye). The revenue for the album was donated to War Child. Norman Bonink (who came from Frank Boeijen Groep) joined the band that same year and continues to be their drummer today.

Deuren zwaaien open
Ramen klappen dicht
Steden overstromen
Gebouwen storten in
Blauwe luchten drijven af
In donkerbruine ogen
Zonder goede reden
The song "Mens" by BLØF explores the concept of the transient nature of life, where nothing is certain, and anything can happen. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, stating that there is nothing that cannot happen today. The imagery of doors opening and windows slamming shut suggests the unpredictability of life, where one moment can bring nothing but joy and another, nothing but sadness. The lines "en hele werelden vergaan omdat ze daar om vroegen zonder het te weten" ("and entire worlds can disappear because they called for it without even knowing it") metaphorically portray how certain events can trigger catastrophic consequences without any prior knowledge of the consequences.
The "vraag" ("question") is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the uncertainty of life, and questioning the validity of fighting for something as simple as existence, of being able to reside and live even if it is just momentarily, connect with one's being, and detach from time and place. The metaphor of cities flooding and buildings collapsing suggests that even our material possessions are impermanent.
Overall, "Mens" by BLØF is a poignant reflection on the unpredictability and impermanence of life. The song encourages listeners to appreciate the fleeting moments of life and to question what truly matters, to be human and to exist in the moment.

There is really nothing that cannot happen today
Doors swing open, windows close
And whole worlds perish
Because they asked for it without knowing
And always the question…
Whether it is ever justified that it is a struggle to just be somewhere
To live only for a moment
To be truly human
And then get away from your place and time!
There is really nothing that cannot change today
Flooding cities, buildings collapsing
Blue skies drift
In dark brown eyes, for no good reason
And always the question ...
Whether it is ever justified that it is a struggle to just be somewhere
To live only for a moment
To be truly human
And then get away from your place and time!
