Their musical style covers a wide variety of genres, though it is most commonly labeled as Rock en Español. Their music has been heavily influenced by Mexico's indigenous population and folk music traditions, most notable the Jarocho style of the state of Veracruz, but also by punk and electronic music and other bands in the Mexico City scene. Perhaps the most distinctive feature of their music is Albarrán's nasal voice, which, combined with his impressive lung capacity (as demonstrated on "La Ingrata", an homage to norteño music), makes for a very distinctive sound. They sing entirely in Spanish but have a significant Anglophone following regardless.
They have an especially eclectic sound, and it's commonly said that none of their discs is of exactly the same genre. For example, "Maria" is a bolero style ballad, "La Ingrata" is a mix of rock and "norteño" , while "Eres", a hit included in "Cuatro Caminos" album, is mostly pop-rock.
They were founded in 1989, and since then have had the same musical lineup:
* Rubén Isaac Albarrán Ortega aka "Pinche Juan" ("Fuckin Juan"), "Cosme", "Anónimo" (Anonymous), "Nrü" (pronounced "dshyoo", [dʃju] in IPA), "Amparo Tonto Medardo In Lak'ech" (or "At Medardo ILK"), "G3", "Gallo Gasss", "Élfego Buendía", "Sizu Yantra" (which is his solo moniker as well), "Rita Cantalagua", "Ixi Xoo" and many others. (vocals, guitar)
* Emmanuel "Meme" del Real Díaz: (keyboards, acoustic guitar, piano, programming, vocals, melodion)
* José Alfredo "Joselo" Rangel Arroyo: (electric guitar, acoustic guitar, vocals)
* Enrique 'Quique' Rangel Arroyo: (bass guitar, electric upright bass, vocals)
Mexican folk music player Alejandro Flores is considered the 5th tacubo, as he has played the violin in almost every Café Tacuba concert since 1994. Since the Cuatro Caminos World Tour, Luis "El Children" Ledezma has played the drums in every concert but is not considered an official member of the band.
**Previously known as "Alicia Ya No Vive Aquí" (a tribute to Martin Scorsese's Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore), the band took its final name from a coffee shop (el Café de Tacuba) located in downtown Mexico City. The cafe, which opened in 1912 and had its heyday in the 1940s and 1950s, was representative of the Pachuco scene at the time, something the band would later acknowledge as an influence. The Café de Tacuba is still in operation as a coffee shop and restaurant on Tacuba Street, in Mexico City's Historic Center. The band changed its name to Café Tacvba (changing the u for a v) in order to avoid legal issues with the coffee shop.

Café Tacvba Lyrics

Llévate contigo mis heridas
Aviéntame y déjame
Mientras yo contemplo tu partida
En espera de que vuelvas y tal vez vuelvas por mí
Y ya te vas, qué me dirás
Dirás, que poco sabes tú decir
Al menos ten conmigo esa bondad
Te extrañaré, no mentiré
The lyrics of Café Tacvba's song "Aviéntame" depict a complicated and emotional relationship, with the singer expressing a desire to be held and hurt by their partner, while also acknowledging the pain of their impending departure. The opening lines of "Abrázame y muérdeme/Llévate contigo mis heridas" ("Embrace me and bite me/Take my wounds with you") suggest a longing for intimacy and intensity, even if it means enduring some pain. The line "Aviéntame y déjame/Mientras yo contemplo tu partida" ("Throw me away and leave me/As I watch you leave") adds a sense of resignation, as the singer recognizes their partner's imminent departure.
The second verse continues this theme, with the lines "Despídete, ya no estarás/Al menos ten conmigo esa bondad" ("Say goodbye, you won't be here anymore/At least have the kindness to be with me"). The singer acknowledges that their partner is leaving, but asks that they at least offer some solace before they go. The final lines of the verse, "Te extrañaré, no mentiré/Me duele que no estés y tú te vas" ("I'll miss you, I won't lie/It hurts that you're not here and you're leaving"), demonstrate the emotional toll that the separation will have on the singer.
The chorus then repeats the opening lines, "Amárrame y muérdeme/Llévate contigo mis heridas/Murmúrame y ládrame/Grita hasta que ya no escuche nada/Sólo ve cómo me quedo aquí esperando" ("Tie me up and bite me/Take my wounds with you/Whisper and bark at me/Scream until I can't hear anything/Just see how I stay here waiting"), with added emphasis on the waiting and hoping that their partner will return.
Overall, the lyrics of "Aviéntame" paint a complex picture of a relationship that is both intense and painful, with the singer exhibiting a mixture of desire, resignation, and heartache as they contemplate their partner's departure.

Hold me and bite me
Take my wounds with you
Fan me and leave me
While I contemplate your departure
Waiting for you to come back and maybe you come back for me
And you're leaving, what will you tell me?
You will say, how little do you know how to say
Say goodbye, you will no longer be
At least have that kindness with me
I will miss you, I will not lie
It hurts me that you are not here and you leave
Tie me up and bite me
Take my wounds with you
Murmur to me and bark at me
Scream until I hear nothing
Just see how I stay here waiting for you to be gone
Waiting for you to come back and maybe you come back for me
Waiting for you to come back and maybe you come back for me
