Catalepsy was founded in 2004. Rob Walden is the only founding member still with the band. In 2008, the band finished a tour with Hatebreed for their Live Dominance DVD release. They completed their first studio album, Iniquity, in January 2008. The album was released on May 13, 2008. In early 2008, the band recorded a music video for their song "Trust". It premiered on MTV's Headbangers Ball. In late 2008, Drew Carothers left the band due to personal issues. He was replaced with Josh Anderson of the Florida band Iamdivide. The band continued to tour, with such bands as After the Burial, Oceano, Too Pure to Die, Waking the Cadaver, Rose Funeral and many others.
In October 2010, during the recording of Bleed, Josh Anderson left the band. He was replaced by Rick Norman, formerly of the band In The Ruins, also a past member of Catalepsy. On December 3, 2010, the band released the first single from Bleed called "Infernal". Medusa
Catalepsy Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I feel warm blood pumping from a cold heart
Lies lie behind those eyes
I want to stop this but I don't know where to start
How many times will you do this again?
If I don't get out now, it will never end
You drain the life out of me (Medusa)
Hostage to wishful thinking
Too good to be true. Your words as fake as you
I refuse to look you in the eyes
You think you've got me, but I'm letting go of you
I'm letting go of you
So let's start back at zero
We had it all to prove and nothing to lose
I would have given you everything
But now I'm giving up on you
There is no starting over
You drain the life out of me (Medusa)
I'm letting go of you (Medusa)
The lyrics to Catalepsy's "Medusa" tell the story of a toxic relationship where the singer is entangled with someone who drains the life out of him like the mythical creature Medusa, turning him to stone with her gaze. The lyrics start with a series of questions about how many times the person has done this before and how many times they will continue to do this. The singer knows that if he doesn't get out now, it will never end. He acknowledges that he wants to stop this, but he doesn't know where to start. The lies that are behind the other person's eyes are draining the life out of him, leaving him a hostage to wishful thinking. The other person's words are as fake as they are too good to be true.
It is clear that the singer has been holding onto hope and that he has been manipulated into thinking that the relationship was real. He refuses to look the other person in the eye, knowing full well that he is letting go of them. The lyrics take a turn towards the end when the singer realizes that there is no starting over. The only option is to let go completely. The song ends with the repetition of the chorus, which echoes the title, "You drain the life out of me (Medusa) I'm letting go of you (Medusa)."
