Karaca was born on 5th April 1945. His first group was called Dynamites, and was a classic rock cover band. Later he joined Jaguars, an Elvis Presley cover band. In 1967, he started to write his own music, forming the band Apaşlar, his first Turkish-language group. In 1969, Karaca and bass-player Serhan Karabay left Apaşlar and started an original Anatolian group called Kardaşlar (Brothers).
In 1972, Karaca joined the group Moğollar (Mongols), and wrote one of his best-known songs, "Namus Belası". However, Cahit Berkay, the leader of Moğollar, wanted an international name for his band, and he left for France to take the group to another level. Karaca, who wanted to continue his Anatolian beat sound, left Moğollar and started his own band Dervişan (Dervishes) in 1974. Karaca and Dervişan sang poetic and progressive songs.
He died on 8th February 2004 of heart and respiratory failure at the age of 58.

Ölmemeğe elde fermanım mı var?
Azrail gelmiş de can talep eder
Benim can vermeye dermanım mı var?
Benim can vermeye dermanım mı var?
Drmanım mı, dermanım mı, dermanım mı, dermanım mı?
Benim can vermeye dermanım mı var?
Huzur-u mahşerde divan dururlar
Harami var diye korku verirler
Benim ipek yüklü kervanım mı var?
Benim ipek yüklü kervanım mı var?
Kervanım mı, kervanım mı, kervanım mı, kervanım mı?
Benim ipek yüklü kervanım mı var?
Karac'oğlan der ki, ismim öğerler
Zehir oldu yediğimiz şekerler
Güzel sever diye itham ederler
Benim hakk'tan özge sevdiğim mi var?
Benim hakk'tan özge sevdiğim mi var?
Sevdiğim mi, sevdiğim mi, sevdiğim mi, sevdiğim mi?
Sevdiğim mi, sevdiğim mi, sevdiğim mi, sevdiğim mi?
The lyrics of Cem Karaca & Kardaşlar's song Üryan Geldim are reflective and contemplative in nature, expressing a sense of resignation and acceptance towards the inevitability of death. The opening lines, "Üryan geldim gene üryan giderim" ("I came naked and I will leave naked"), speak to the idea that we come into this world with nothing and leave with nothing. The next line, "Ölmemeğe elde fermanım mı var?" ("Do I have a decree in my hand not to die?"), further emphasizes the inescapable reality of death, and suggests that no one can escape this fate.
The second verse, "Dirilirler dirilirler gelirler" ("They will come back to life, they will come and stand at the court of the hereafter"), speaks to the idea of resurrection and judgement in the afterlife. The line "Benim ipek yüklü kervanım mı var?" ("Do I have a caravan loaded with silk?") suggests that in the face of this judgement, material possessions will not matter, and that one must focus on the state of their soul.
The final verse, attributed to the poet Karac'oğlan, speaks to the idea that he is criticized for his love of beauty, which is seen as a cause of his downfall. The line "Benim hakk'tan özge sevdiğim mi var?" ("Is there anyone I love more than God?") emphasizes the idea that ultimately, one's love for God and devotion to their faith is what truly matters in the end.
Overall, the lyrics of Üryan Geldim express an acceptance of the inevitability of death and a focus on the afterlife and the judgement of the soul.
