He was one of the most important figures in music at the turn of the 20th century; his music represents the transition from late-romantic to 20th century classical.
Debussy's most dramatic contribution to music history was his disregard for traditional chord structures and tonality. He is one of the most important exponents of the whole tone scale in classical music history. His compositions flowed without a strict sense of metre or rhythm, and are considered the pioneering works of the Impressionist genre of classical music, named in comparison with the visual arts movement.
Debussy's impact was far reaching. His free use of harmony, which often altogether disregarded the concepts of tertian harmony, has been cited as an influence on the rise of Jazz music later in the 20th century.

This piece honestly has almost the same structure as the arabesque number one but instead of flying over a Middle Eastern bazaar at night you’re like a misfit running through one in the morning
Rolina
arabesque 1: beautiful river at night
arabesque 2: dennys parking lot at 2am

This version saves this piece for me. I used to think it was far less interesting than Arabesque no.1 until I heard this version that does it justice from every aspect.

I totally agree!

Listen to the one recorded by Debussy himself... it's even better!

Oh dear I thought this piece was played 10 times slower than this... Back to the piano I go...
Chelsea Watson
Sometimes to avoid copyright, pieces are played at a certain speed, often the correct speed and then digitally sped up so that the video is allowed to stay up. However this piece is public domain so I think this is the actual speed.
