I wonder about the extent to which Debussy meant this rendition of "Ondine" to be compared to Ravel's earlier composition of the same name? And what comparison is to be made? There seems something overtly sinister in Debussy's piece that is lacking in Ravel's, though the legends of Ondine all suggest that her siren song led seamen to their deaths beneath the sea.

Debussy Chopin

Good question yes the ondine from ravel is to suggest more of the legend of bringing mortals to their deaths underwater but Richard Goode has suggested that Debussy's ondine is more a frolicking of the mermaid and the sinister parts to reflect the people and hounds looking for this mermaid to trap her. But at the end she just slips under the water and there is a shimmering silence.

It may just be a question of taste. You can't compare the power of Ravel with the subtility of Debussy, they just don't belong to the same place, their piece is an interpretation of the same character, but coming from separate universes. To be fully honest, my heart still beats a little stronger with Debussy (no offense to Ravel ;))
