Close Every Door
Donny Osmond Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Close every door to me
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light
Do what you want with me
Hate me and laugh at me
Darken my daytime
And torture my night
If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone
For I know I shall find
My own peace of mind
For I have been promised
A land of my own

Close every door to me
Hide all the world from me
Bar all the windows
And shut out the light

Just give me a number
Instead of my name
Forget all about me
And let me decay
I do not matter
I'm only one person
Destroy me completely
Then throw me away

If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world

Close every door to me
Keep those I love from me
Children of Israel
Are never alone
For we know we shall find
Our own peace of mind

For we have been promised
A land of our own

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Donny Osmond's song "Close Every Door" evoke a sense of desolation, loneliness, and abandonment. The song tells the story of Joseph, a prisoner who has been wrongfully accused and thrown into jail. He pleads with his captors to close every door, hide the world from him, and remove all possible sources of hope and light from his life. He even suggests that he does not fear death, as long as he knows what fate awaits him. Joseph is a battered and broken individual, stripped of his dignity and humanity, and left to rot in his own misery.

However, amidst the despair, the song also carries a message of hope and resilience. Joseph is a man of faith, and he confidently asserts that the Children of Israel are never alone, even in their darkest moments. He believes that he will find his own peace of mind, for he has been promised a land of his own. The song thus serves as a poignant commentary on the power of faith and the indomitability of the human spirit. Joseph may be physically confined, but his spirit is free and unbound.

Every time I hear this song I always have this mental image of people in the concentration camps during WW2.
Especially this part:
"Just give me a number
Instead of my name
Forget all about me
And let me decay
I do not matter,
I'm only one person
Destroy me completely
Then throw me away
If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world"

Always gives me chills.

What makes Donny underrated is the fact he has no drama - private or otherwise.

During a time when actors/singers/rich were doing scandals of every kind.

Now during a time when everyone is an expert of everything and everyone has access to media, it is rare to become embroiled in one big enough to draw ALL attention of the internet world wide.

The Johnny Depp/ Heard trial changed the that in this age.

Even with Pitt/Jole Lee trial coming up, it will not equal the Depp trial

Donny unfortunately faded into obscurity - few people know he voiced Shang in Mulan (singing voice)

Donny Osmond may be one of the most underrated performers of his generation. His voice is so crisp and bright - his enunciation makes it so easy to listen and understand the words, so you can concentrate on the emotion he expresses. Just lovely.

@Gonk

and his song in Mulan is forever burned into our brains and it will never get out :) Let's get down to business, to defeat the Huns
Did they send me daughters, when I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man out of you

You are absolutely correct. If you know anything about Donny Osmond it is that he suffers from depression and anxiety. Much of this is attributed to the fact that he is an absolute perfectionist. Unfortunately he has suffered with this all of his life which is what makes every performance of his absolute perfection. Much like this scene...his own personal imprisonment and torture means we get to enjoy his beautiful and perfect performances.
