They began writing and recording their own music in 1956, and their first hit song came in 1957, with "Bye Bye Love", written by Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. The song hit No. 1 in the spring of 1957, and additional hits would follow through 1958, many of them written by the Bryants, including "Wake Up Little Susie", "All I Have to Do Is Dream", and "Problems". In 1960, they signed with the major label Warner Bros. Records and recorded "Cathy's Clown", written by the brothers themselves, which was their biggest selling single. The brothers enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in 1961, and their output dropped off, though additional hit singles continued through 1962, with "That's Old Fashioned (That's the Way Love Should Be)" being their last top-10 hit.
Long-simmering disputes with Wesley Rose, the CEO of Acuff-Rose Music, which managed the group, a growing drug usage in the 1960s, as well as changing tastes in popular music, led to the group's decline in popularity in its native U.S., though the brothers continued to release hit singles in the U.K. and Canada, and had many highly successful tours throughout the 1960s. In the early 1970s, the brothers began releasing solo recordings, and in 1973 they officially broke up. Starting in 1983, the brothers got back together, and would continue to perform periodically until Phil's death in 2014. Don died seven years later.
The group was highly influential on the music of the generation that followed it. Many of the top acts of the 1960s were heavily influenced by the close-harmony singing and acoustic guitar playing of the Everly Brothers, including the Beatles, the Beach Boys, the Bee Gees, and Simon & Garfunkel. In 2015, Rolling Stone ranked the Everly Brothers No. 1 on its list of the 20 Greatest Duos of All Time. They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as part of the inaugural class of 1986, and into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2001. Don was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2019, earning the organization's first Iconic Riff Award for his distinctive rhythm guitar intro to the Everlys' massive 1957 hit "Wake Up Little Susie".

Cold
The Everly Brothers Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The skies are going grey
I begged my baby not to leave
I couldn't make her stay
The heat has disappeared
The eternal flame is low
The forecast ain't so good
It's cold, like a frozen teardrop
There's a chill in the air
And there's ice in my veins
And it won't stop
It's cold, like an endless winter
The moon's on the run
And even the sun is cold
I gotta see my girl i gotta see her eyes
The barometer is falling
Only she can make it rise
There's nothing on the trees
There's nothing for me here
I gotta find salvation
And some thermal underwear
It's cold, and it's getting colder
They're evacuating Satan
Who's waiting for hell to freeze over
It's cold, like an endless winter
The stars are all gone
And even the sun is cold
The moon's on the run
And even the sun is cold
I gotta see my girl i gotta see her eyes
The barometer is falling
Only she can make it rise
There's nothing on the trees
There's nothing for me here
I gotta find salvation
And some thermal underwear
It's cold, and it's getting colder
They're vaccinating Satan
Who's shaking all over pneumonia
It's cold, like an endless winter
The moon's on the run
And even the sun is cold
The stars are all gone
And even the sun is cold
The world is too old
And even the sun is cold
In "Cold," The Everly Brothers express the emotional and physical coldness they experience after their lover leaves them. The lyrics depict a sense of desolation and emptiness, comparing the absence of their lover to the harshness of winter. The imagery used throughout the song creates a vivid picture of the cold and bleak atmosphere surrounding the singer.
The verses describe the death of flowers, grey skies, and the inability to make their lover stay. The chorus emphasizes the coldness that permeates their existence, comparing it to a frozen teardrop and an endless winter. The singer longs to see their lover's eyes, believing that only their presence can warm their soul and bring back the feeling of hope.
The lyrics also contain a touch of humor and exaggeration, as the singer mentions the barometer falling and the need for thermal underwear. These lines add a lighthearted tone amidst the solemnity, capturing the singer's desperate attempt to find relief from the cold.
Overall, "Cold" portrays the pain and longing that comes with heartbreak, using the metaphor of winter to convey the emptiness and isolation felt after a loved one's departure.

This is fantastic - thanks for posting it. I have it on the Whistle in the Wind cd, and don't recall ever seeing it listed as a track on any of the EB cds. I wonder if there's a musical great of this era the EBs didn't work with.

+Rosann Johnson There's a duller version of the song on the cast album. This version is from the Concept Album which also featured Meat Loaf, Boy George, Bonnie Tyler... The Everlys were amazing.
