Julie
Doris Day Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Julie)
It's the voice of my one love
And it promises ecstasy
Day and night it is calling me
But I'm afraid to go

(Julie)
Though I run to escape it
Still it calls irresistibly
And although it's my destiny
Sorrow is there, I know

Warm are his arms, tender his kiss
But in his eyes hidden, the danger lies

(Julie)
Must I go where he leads me?
Though it be through eternity
Oh, I know I will never be free

Free from the voice that calls
(Julie)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Doris Day's song "Julie" depict a story of a woman who is constantly drawn towards her "one love" despite her fears and reservations. The song describes the voice of this love as promising ecstasy, and calling out to her both day and night. However, the woman remains afraid to go to her love, even as she tries to run away from it. The song suggests that the woman believes it is her destiny to be with this love, but that sorrow will be present in their relationship. While the love offers warmth and tenderness, the woman sees danger hidden within his eyes. Ultimately, the song leaves the question open whether the woman will choose to follow the voice of her love or break free from its hold.

The lyrics of the "Julie" suggest a theme of temptation and the struggle to resist it. It portrays the pull of something that is both alluring and dangerous, and the conflict that arises when desire clashes with caution. The song is often interpreted as a cautionary tale about the dangers of giving into one's desires and the consequences that can follow.

I can't believe this song is on YouTube! THANK YOU!!! I also can't believe this movie got so much flack, I truly believe it is one of Doris Day's best films and she did not get the respect she deserved for it. This film showed she was a better actress than she was given credit for. Such a shame Hollywood didn't recognize it.

Excellent song and Doris' performance was equally as good. She was underrated as an actress.

My mother used to own and play this 45 and I remember listening to it very carefully - it's got a deep, deep meaning to it and I was only 7 or 8 at the time. Isn't this movie about a controlling, abusive husband?
