The first roots of the band may be found in Mad Madam, which was a cover band with a set list full of songs from Seattle groups. Kaan Tangöze and Ari Barokas were together in Mad Madam until Tangöze flew to Seattle to earn a graduate degree. Upon returning to Turkiye with a handful of songs molded in the spirit of the Seattle scene, Tangöze formed Duman with Ari Barokas from his former group and Batuhan Mutlugil from another local cover band. After first deciding to work with session drummers, drummer Alen Konakoğlu took on this responsibility and the group released Eski Köprünün Altında in 1999.

Suyun üstünden
Kubbenin altından
Yollara çıktık biz
Köyün yanından
Kahvenin sağından
Sazın solundan
Bağırmaya, kudurmaya, haykırmaya
Geldik, geldik, geldik, geldik...
Kal burada bizimle
Bu akşam
Balın yanından
Bademin tadından
Tazenin ardından
Yollara düştük biz
Tozun içinden
Göğün üstünden
Dumanın altından
Yollara vurduk biz
Bağırmaya, kudurmaya, haykırmaya
Geldik, geldik, geldik, geldik...
Kal burada bizimle
Bu akşam
The lyrics to Duman's "Kümbela" describe a group of friends journeying through different parts of a city and a village, experiencing various sights, sounds, and tastes along the way. They pass through the streets and over the water, under the domes and past the coffee shops and musicians, reveling in the excitement of their travels. They shout and scream with joy as they venture on, urging others to join them in their revelry. The song is an invitation to join in the fun, to experience the thrill and adventure of life, to take risks and enjoy the company of others.
The song's lyrics are meant to convey a sense of liberation and abandon, a call to break free from the constraints of ordinary life and explore the world around us. It speaks to the idea that we should embrace the journey of life, enjoy the ride, and share the experience with others. The song's title, "Kümbela," translates to "pitcher" or "jug," which may symbolize the idea of sharing and coming together over a drink, a common theme in Turkish social culture.
