The first roots of the band may be found in Mad Madam, which was a cover band with a set list full of songs from Seattle groups. Kaan Tangöze and Ari Barokas were together in Mad Madam until Tangöze flew to Seattle to earn a graduate degree. Upon returning to Turkiye with a handful of songs molded in the spirit of the Seattle scene, Tangöze formed Duman with Ari Barokas from his former group and Batuhan Mutlugil from another local cover band. After first deciding to work with session drummers, drummer Alen Konakoğlu took on this responsibility and the group released Eski Köprünün Altında in 1999.
Senin Marşın

Söylemek zaman alsın
Vaktimiz dardır
İsteyen yaya kalsın
Ellerimiz bağlı
İstediği kadar olsun
Hislerimiz farklı
Doğrusu yok düşün taşın
Eğrisi yok fikrin başın
Toprak olup giden naaşın
Ardından ağlaşın
Doğrusu yok düşün taşın
Eğrisi yok fikrin başın
En güzeli insan olmaktır
Artık kaynaşın
İstediğin yere var
Desturun sanat olsun
Aşka gönül verdin
Kolların kanat olsun
Doğrusu yok düşün taşın
Eğrisi yok fikrin başın
Toprak olup giden naaşın
Ardından ağlaşın
Doğrusu yok düşün taşın
Eğrisi yok fikrin başın
En güzeli insan olmaktır
Artık kaynaşın
İşte kalem işte kurşun
Böyle biter senin marşın
Bestelenirken ben ordaydım
Artık siz paylaşın
The lyrics of Duman's Senin Marşın reflect a message of individualistic and non-conformist ideals, urging for freedom of expression and thought. The opening lines, "We have words / Let time take to say them / Our time is limited / Let those who want stay behind," set the tone for the song, indicating a lack of patience for those who cannot keep up with the singer's ideas. The following lines, "Our hands are tied / Let it be as much as it wants / Our feelings are different / Let's stay away from anger," suggest a sense of frustration and helplessness, but also a desire for peaceful resolution.
The chorus is repeated twice, emphasizing the message of the song. "There is no right or wrong, think and reflect / There is no straight or crooked, it's your idea's beginnings / Cry after the body that turns to soil / The best thing is to be human, unite now." These lyrics propose a philosophy of personal responsibility and free thinking, disregarding rigid ideologies and embracing individual growth and connection with others.
The verses after the chorus convey a call for artistic expression, "Go wherever you want / Let permission be art / You gave yourself to love / Let your arms be wings." The final lines, "Here's the pen, here's the bullet / This is how your anthem ends / I was there when it was composed / Now you can share," complete the sentiment of the song, suggesting that the singer is satisfied with their personal expression and is ready to move on.
Overall, Senin Marşın is a song that upholds the value of personal freedom, non-conformity, and individual growth. It encourages reflection and creative expression, and urges the listener to be at peace with themselves and the world around them.
