The first roots of the band may be found in Mad Madam, which was a cover band with a set list full of songs from Seattle groups. Kaan Tangöze and Ari Barokas were together in Mad Madam until Tangöze flew to Seattle to earn a graduate degree. Upon returning to Turkiye with a handful of songs molded in the spirit of the Seattle scene, Tangöze formed Duman with Ari Barokas from his former group and Batuhan Mutlugil from another local cover band. After first deciding to work with session drummers, drummer Alen Konakoğlu took on this responsibility and the group released Eski Köprünün Altında in 1999.

The lyrics to Duman's song "Paranoya" talk about the feeling of being watched and followed everywhere the singer goes, as if there are always people lurking in the shadows. The first verse repeats the line "there are people around" in different locations, emphasizing the idea that the singer can't escape from this feeling no matter where he is. The second verse describes these people as having limbs, horns, and tails, which are all exaggerated features that make them seem more sinister and oppressive. The line "they take our minds" suggests that these people have some sort of control over the singer's thoughts or mental state, which adds to the feeling of paranoia.
The chorus talks about how the singer has been influenced by these people's voices and words, and how he has incorporated them into his own songs. However, the use of the phrase "believe me" implies that there is doubt surrounding these influences - perhaps the singer is unsure if these people are truly guiding him or if he is just imagining things. The last verse again emphasizes that there are people in every room, highlighting the inescapable nature of the paranoia.
Overall, "Paranoya" is a tense and unsettling song that captures the feeling of being constantly watched and followed. The use of exaggerated imagery and repetition in the lyrics emphasizes the suffocating nature of this paranoia, while the ambiguity surrounding the source of these feelings leaves the listener unsure of what is real and what is imagined.
