Heavily influenced by American rock & roll, Mitchell (who went solo in 1963) has often recorded outside France, at first in London, but later in Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee. Guitarist Jimmy Page and drummer Bob Graham were among the British session musicians who regularly supported him in London.
Avoir 16 Ans Aujourd'hui

Pour avoir du talent
Si t'es doué pour l' malheur
T'as une belle carrière qui t'attend
J'ai été gâté
Génération dorée
La vie paraissait facile
J'évitais les études
Qui me poursuivaient
J'étudiais tout des filles
Qui ne s'intéressaient qu'aux plus grands
J'ai été gâté
Génération dorée
L'avenir semblait docile
Tout roulait et pourtant
J'aimerais avoir seize ans aujourd'hui
Aller au-devant de la vie
Avoir droit à un bout d'essai
Mais en sachant ce que je sais
Tu vivras des conflits
Avec tes parents
La société, les amis
Te prendront la tête tout le temps
J'ai été gâté
Génération dorée
Même si j'étais inutile
J' pouvais sortir du rang
J'aimerais avoir seize ans aujourd'hui
Découvrir le jour et la nuit
Avoir la vie dont je rêvais
Mais en sachant ce que je sais
J'aimerais avoir seize ans aujourd'hui
Brûler par les deux bouts la vie
Aimer quand je veux, qui me plaît
Mais en sachant ce que je sais
J'aimerais avoir seize ans aujourd'hui
Aller au-devant de la vie
Avoir droit à un bout d'essai
Mais en sachant ce que je sais
J'aimerais avoir seize ans aujourd'hui
Découvrir le jour et la nuit...
In this song, Eddy Mitchell reminisces about his youth and the opportunities he had as part of the "golden generation." He reflects on how at sixteen years old, life seemed easy and straightforward, with all his needs met and generally feeling "spoiled." He also expresses his desire to relive those times, but with the knowledge and understanding he has gained since then.
The chorus expresses Mitchell's longing to be sixteen again, to have the chance to "discover the day and night" and live life fully. However, he acknowledges that with age comes experience, including conflicts with parents, society, and friends, hence the line "but knowing what I know." The verse "Il te faudra souffrir pour avoir du talent" roughly translates to "You will have to suffer to have talent." Mitchell believes that the hardships he has faced in life have helped shape him into the talented artist he is today.
Overall, the song is a reflection on youth, nostalgia, and the wisdom that comes with age. It suggests that while the simplicity and freedom of adolescence may be alluring, it is essential to appreciate the experiences that shape us as individuals.
