It's Alright With Me
Ella Fitzgerald Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the wrong time and the wrong place
Though your face is charming, it's the wrong face
It's not her face, but such a charming face
That it's all right with me

It's the wrong song in the wrong style
Though your smile is lovely, it's the wrong smile
It's not her smile, but such a lovely smile
So it's all right with me

You can't know how happy I am that we've met
I'm strangely attracted to you
There's someone I'm trying so hard to forget
Don't you want to forget someone too?

It's the wrong game with the wrong chips
Though your lips are tempting, they're the wrong lips
They're not her lips, but they're such tempting lips
That if some night you're free

Dear, it's all right
Yes, it's all right with me

Overall Meaning

The song "It's Alright With Me" by Ella Fitzgerald is a ballad that explores the themes of attraction and forgetting the past. The lyrics convey a sense of sadness and longing as the singer tries to move on from an old love, but struggles to do so. The first verse highlights the irony of meeting someone attractive at the wrong time and place, and the second verse finds beauty in the wrong smile, wrong style, and the wrong lips. The chorus reiterates that it's alright to give into temptation by suggesting that forgetting someone is a mutual goal. Ultimately, the song conveys a sense of resigned acceptance that the new love interest cannot replace the previous one, but can still be appreciated and enjoyed.

How was it possible for one person to be handed any song in existence... and perform it perfectly? Wonderful Ella!

@tajadhial4222

I think Tom waits did it better, so cinematic

@CPorter

That's basically any artist from the 20s - 50s.

OKAY, so... I came here as a massive Tom Waits fan, having heard his version, to try and understand the song more holistically. It's already been said to death just how perfect Ella's voice lends itself to this song, but I have to add - hearing both versions makes me really appreciate how well this song is written. There's a fine line between simple lyrics and lyrics that both tell a very distinct yet relatable story and simultaneously are memorable and easy to sing along with. After my third repetition of this song I mostly had the lyrics down and was able to (crappily) sing along.

Talk about brilliance! Combining writing that is both easily memorized and that tells a clean narrative is something you just don't see in a lot of modern music. Absolute masterpiece, this. Both Ella's performance and Porter's writing, just sheer excellence. MWAH
