The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

E que ando bebendo demais
Que essa vida agitada não serve pra nada
Andar por aí bar em bar, bar em bar
Dizem até que ando rindo demais
E que conto anedotas demais
Que não largo o cigarro
E dirijo meu carro correndo
Ninguém sabe, é que isso acontece
Porque vou passar minha vida
Esquecendo você
E a razão porque vivo esses dias
Banais
É porque ando triste
Ando triste demais
É por isso que eu falo demais
E é por isso que eu bebo demais
E a razão porque eu vivo essa vida
Agitada demais
É porque meu amor por você é tão grande
O meu amor por você é imenso
É porque meu amor por você é
Enorme demais
The lyrics of Fagner's "Demais" convey the singer's overwhelming sadness and heartache caused by a past love. Despite appearing to live a life of excess, with people accusing him of talking and drinking too much and leading an aimless and agitated life, Fagner admits that the reason for his behavior is the immense love he has for the person he is trying to forget. Despite putting on a front of being carefree and indulgent, his heart is heavy and weighed down with the memories of the person he loves. "Demais" is a powerful expression of the pain that comes with heartbreak and the ways people may attempt to cope with it.
The first verse of the song sets up the contradiction between the singer's outward behavior and his internal emotions. The second verse delves a little deeper into the singer's coping mechanisms, highlighting his smoking and reckless driving as attempts to distract himself from his pain. However, the chorus reveals the real reason for his excessive behavior: his immense love for the person who has left him. The line "É porque meu amor por você é tão grande" is particularly poignant, underscoring the fact that the singer's excess is fueled by the intensity of his feelings.
Overall, "Demais" is a touching and relatable portrayal of the pain of heartbreak and the different ways people may try to cope with it. Even though the singer puts on a facade of excess, the underlying emotions prove to be much more complex and poignant.
