The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.
Esquecimento

Mas sempre transbordou
O rio de lembranças
Que um dia me afogou
E nesta correnteza
Fiquei a navegar
Embora, com certeza,
Amar nunca me trouxe
Completo esquecimento
Mas antes me somou
Ao antigo tormento
E assim, cada vez mais,
Me prendo neste nó
E cada grito meu
Parece ser maior
The lyrics to Fagner's song "Esquecimento" convey a sense of longing and pain that comes with unfulfilled love. The singer expresses that he has never been capable of loving without overflowing with emotions, and as a result, he is lost in a river of memories that once drowned him. He is aware that he will never be able to save himself despite the certainty that loving has never brought him complete oblivion. Rather, it has only added to his torment, leaving him more and more entangled in a knot of emotions that seem to grow louder and bigger with each passing moment.
The lyrics are poetic and deeply introspective, touching on the complexities of love and the difficulty of grappling with intense emotions. It is a song about being consumed by a love that cannot be reciprocated, and the emotional toll that it takes on the individual. The imagery of the river and the singer being lost in the water perfectly reflects the sense of being overpowered by intense emotions that are impossible to control. Overall, "Esquecimento" is a poignant and beautifully written song that captures the raw emotions of unfulfilled love.

Amar, nunca me coube
I have never been capable of love
Mas sempre transbordou
But love has always overflowed from me
O rio de lembranças
A river of memories
Que um dia me afogou
That once drowned me
E nesta correnteza
And in this current
Fiquei a navegar
I remained adrift
Embora, com certeza,
Although, for certain
Não possa me salvar
I cannot save myself
Amar nunca me trouxe
Loving has never brought me
Completo esquecimento
Complete forgetfulness
Mas antes me somou
But instead added to
Ao antigo tormento
The old torment
E assim, cada vez mais,
And so, more and more,
Me prendo neste nó
I am tangled in this knot
E cada grito meu
And every one of my screams
Parece ser maior
Seems to be louder
