The youngest of the five children of José Fares, Lebanese immigrant to Brazil, and Dona Francisca, Fagner was born in Fortaleza, the capital of the state of Ceará, although his birth was recorded in Orós.
At the age of five years he won a youth competition at a local radio station. As a teen, he formed vocal and instrumental groups and began to compose his own music. In 1968 he won the Festival de Música Popular do Ceará (Popular Music Festival of Ceará) with his song "Nada Sou" (I am Nothing).
In 1971 he moved to the capital Brasília, taking first place in the Festival de Música Popular do Centro de Estudos Universitários de Brasília (Popular Music Festival of the University Studies Center of Brasília) with his piece "Mucuripe" (with collaborator Belchior), which was later recorded by artist Elis Regina, and became Fagner's first notable success as a composer. He won prizes in other categories with additional pieces, as well.
He has had a distinguished career as a performer, singer, songwriter and composer for over 3 decades, and is also known for his collaborations with other MPB artists such as Caetano Veloso, Roberta Miranda, Chico Buarque and others.

Os aviões me dão medo
Os temporais não tem hora
Os dias passam ligeiro
Escondido no deserto
Minha boca berra aflita
Sempre chove quando eu canto
Sempre chove quando eu canto
E ela fica mais bonita
Vi na tela de um cinema
O amor como corisco
Raio de luz no céu negro
Musica de um velho disco
Só quero ver com os meus olhos
Porque ninguém pode ver
O escuro é tudo o que eu tenho
Que luz eu posso querer
Só quero ver com os meus olhos
Porque ninguém pode ver
O escuro é tudo o que eu tenho
Que luz eu posso querer
O meu amor já vai tarde
Os aviões me dão medo
Os temporais não tem hora
Os dias passam ligeiro
Escondido no deserto
Minha boca berra aflita
Sempre chove quando eu canto
E ela fica mais bonita
Vi na tela de um cinema
O amor como corisco
Raio de luz no céu negro
Musica de um velho disco
Só quero ver com os meus olhos
Porque ninguém pode ver
O escuro é tudo o que eu tenho
Que luz eu posso querer
Só quero ver com os meus olhos
Porque ninguém pode ver
O escuro é tudo o que eu tenho
Que luz eu posso querer
The lyrics of Fagner's song "Toda Luz" express a feeling of longing and uncertainty, while juxtaposing images of darkness and light. The singer begins by acknowledging that their love is already gone, and that they are afraid of airplanes and thunderstorms. The passing of time is also emphasized, and the singer feels overwhelmed by it. They find themselves crying out in the desert, with their voice echoing in distress. Interestingly, the singer notes that it always rains when they sing, and that their beloved becomes even more beautiful.
The second verse of the song speaks of a cinematic experience, in which the singer saw love as a lightning bolt. They describe it as a flash of light in the dark sky, like a song from an old record. The final lines of the song indicate a desire to see things with their own eyes, and to appreciate the darkness as much as the light. The singer seems to be searching for meaning in the midst of confusion and heartache.
