De l'autre côté de toi
Francis Cabrel Lyrics

Je sais que tu vis là-bas
Au bout de l'autoroute
J'pourrais pas me tromper
C'est allumé la nuit.
S'il te reste un instant
Faudra que tu m'écoutes
Faudra que tu m'attendes
Faut pas que tu m'oublies
De l'autre côté de toi
Je suis presque sûr qu'il n'y a plus rien
De l'autre côté de toi
Le désert commence où finit ta main
Toute l'eau qui ruisselle
Au fil de tes cheveux
J'ai encore besoin d'elle
Pour rafraîchir mes yeux
Est-ce qu'au moins tu m'entends
Quand j'appelle au secours ?
Je suis jaloux des colliers
De diamants qui t'entourent
De l'autre côté de toi
Je suis presque sûr qu'il n'y a plus rien
De l'autre côté de toi
Le désert commence où finit ta main
Laisse-moi t'endormir
Une nuit boréale
Sur un lit de pétales
Aux reflets de saphir
Laisse-moi me blottir

Overall Meaning

In "De l'autre côté de toi," Francis Cabrel expresses his longing for someone who he believes lives on the other side of a highway. He recognizes the place, and he even knows that the lights stay on at night, but he has not physically been there. He begs this person to listen to him and not to forget him, even though he is separated from her by an unknown distance.

Cabrel imagines that on the other side of this person is a desert that begins where she ends. He remembers the sensation of the water that flowed through her hair and into his own eyes, and he wonders if she even hears him calling for her or if she is too distracted by the diamonds that adorn her neck. In the end, Cabrel pleads to sleep with her, to hold her close to him while resting on a bed of petals and surrounded by stars.

The song is a tender expression of love and longing, even if it is not clear if the person on the other side of the highway is real or symbolic. The songwriter speaks of the desire to connect with another person and to be held close, while acknowledging that there may be a vast emptiness that could make that impossible.
