Apart from his later symphonies - 35, 36, 38, and the final three, 39, 40, and 41, Mozart never really prioritised the symphony as a form into which he poured his more profound thoughts.

Apart from these six symphonies, none of the earlier works could really be said to approach, never mind surpass the symphonies of Haydn.

Mozart’s earlier symphonies whilst never less than engaging, beautifully composed, and invariably attractive, are in truth rarely programmed in concerts apart from 25 (a formulaic, one-off attempt at a ‘sturm und drang’ style symphony), 28, 29, 31 (an over-rated, noisy bag of tricks and special effects), and 33, which do occasionally appear.

The symphony became more important to Mozart in the 1780’s once he got to Vienna, and had met Haydn; from that point - particularly with the last six symphonies - Mozart indubitably wrote six of the greatest Classical symphonies of all.

But from being a 15 year old - absolutely not.

I absolutely love this symphony! I cannot get enough of it. I could listen to this magnificent work every day and not get tired of listening to it.

I've loved it since I first heard it in the 80s. If it had been given a name by someone I'm sure it would be a lot more famous.

Can never get enough of Haydn's symphonies.

This is superlative Haydn. IMO, it could not be surpassed. What I really love is the incredible enthusiasm of the orchestra. For some reason, most orchestras seem to love playing Haydn. That is definitely the case here.

Thanks for sharing the fantastic recording of all these symphonies!!!! It's very interesting to see (listen) the progress of F.J.Haydn from the 1st to the last symphony. I'm unable which one is my favourite; I love them all.

My favorite is the one I'm actually listen to. It changes from one to another, they're all so great.

Great friend of J.C.W.T.Mozart; you don’t need all the baptismal names - they were never used during either composers’ lifetimes; it’s plain Joseph Haydn.

Gérard Begni

Quite energetic and contrasted rendering. What Haydn absolutely calls for. 🖤🤎💜💙💚💛🧡❤ 💌💗💞💕💟

5:24 - No composer after him have sublime moments like this ! In hindsight, a similar motion occurs in Schubert's 8th, listen closely from 5:40.

One more magnificent symphony. This masterpiece touches us deeply in our soul not only for the lyricism but for the sensitivity, I think nobody can be indifferent to this marvelous music. The direction and the orchestra performance are exceptional. Viva Haydn and his amazing talent and musicality. Bravo for this glorious recording.
