Akyol is the daughter of fellow artist Muzaffer Akyol, and, like her father, she is involved in visual arts as well as being a graduate from cultural studies. Her debut solo record, Develerle Yaşıyorum, stroked a new chord in Turkish alternative music scene. She unearthed her own story expanded into nine tracks in May 2014. She gained notoriety in the scene as each parts of Toz ve Toz, and the local hypnotic "electro-acoustic" band Seni Görmem İmkansız with Tuğçe Şenoğul, now determined to continue her musical venture as a whimsical storyteller.
The singer's sound can be defined as ‘musiki’ rather than the old good muzak itself. An old school word used in Turkish language for music, be that a more sophisticated, oriental and spiritual sound.
Akyol received Best Artist award at Songlines Music Awards 2019.

The lyrics to Gaye Su Akyol's song Laziko describe the singer's experiences with love and heartbreak. The first stanza paints a picture of beauty in nature ("Hamsiler yerinde güzel" - the olive trees look beautiful in their place), juxtaposed with the turmoil of the singer's love life ("Aşka düştüm, sevdim ama / üzer beni her gün üzer" - I fell in love, I loved, but it weighs on me every day). The singer also describes smoking a fancy cigarette with a clove in it ("Sardım afili cigara / Koydum karanfil ucuna" - I wrapped a fancy cigarette, I put a clove in it), which symbolizes their attempts to find solace and pleasure despite their pain. The song concludes with a reflection on the cyclical nature of life and the universality of pain ("Horon tepe tepe biter / Yollar gide gide biter / Aynı gaide aynı yasa / Kuru yaş yandı başbaşa" - The dance ends on the hill, the roads end as they go. The same grief, the same sadness. Dry tears burn alone).
