The sisters grew up in a musical family, and began playing instruments from an early age in the cover band Rockinhaim, fronted by their parents, Moti and Donna. The two elder sisters, Este and Danielle, began performing with the pop group "Valli Girls" in 2005. They released a few songs on soundtrack and compilation albums under that name, but left the group shortly after an appearance at the 2005 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards. They formed Haim with younger sister Alana in 2007, but did not seriously consider it a professional career for some years. After Danielle became a successful touring guitarist, first with Jenny Lewis and later with Julian Casablancas, Haim reformed as a full-time operation in 2012.
The group's first release, Forever EP (an EP released as a limited-time download), combined with positive reception at the South by Southwest festival, led to a deal with Polydor Records and a management deal with Jay-Z's Roc Nation group in mid-2012. The band began recording material for their first album, Days Are Gone, in sessions between touring dates, including appearances at the Glastonbury Festival. The album charted in the top ten in several countries, including the number-one spot in the UK, and the group had won several "best of" awards by the end of 2013. The group was nominated for Best New Artist at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. Their second album, Something to Tell You, was released in July 2017. Their third album, titled Women in Music Pt. III, was released on June 26, 2020. The group received nominations at the 63rd Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rock Performance (for "The Steps").
In 2024, the sisters blacked out the band's Instagram, seemingly teasing new music by putting "writing... writing... writing..." in the account's bio.

Give me a miracle, I just want out from this
I've done my share of helpin' with your defense
But now I can't dismiss
It's killin' me
Hometown of mine
Just got back from the boulevard, can't stop cryin'
The guy at the corner shop gave me a line and a smile
But a lie is a lie
Oh, these days, these days, I can't win
These days I can't see no visions
I'm breakin', losin' faith
These days, these days
(These days, these days)
These days, these days
(These days, these days)
New York is cold
I tried the winter there once, nope
Clearly the greatest city in the world
But it was not my home
I felt more alone
These days, these days, I can't win
These days I can't see no visions
I'm breakin', losin' faith
These days, these days
(These days, these days)
I'm thinkin' 'bout leavin'
Sometimes I speed down Crescent Heights
Can't hardly feel it running every light
But I wasn't fazed, 'cause it wasn't mine
Was I just dreaming?
And every time I think I might (send my love, send my tears)
Leave this city for the first time (wavin' back to my fears)
(City of mine)
I wake up on the other side (send my love, send my tears)
Wondering, "Was I just dreamin'?" (Wavin' back to my fears)
(City of mine)
Was I just dreamin'?
(Send my love, send my tears)
(Wavin' back to my fears)
(City of mine)
Was I just dreamin'?
In the song Los Angeles by HAIM, the lyrics are about the love-hate relationship between the artist and the city they have grown to call home. In this song, the singer expresses their confusion and frustration with the city, mentioning how they want out from there and how they are breaking and losing faith. The song starts with the plea for a miracle, indicating that the artist has had enough and is tired of being in LA. The singer talks about how they have helped with the defense of the city, but now they cannot dismiss how they feel anymore. The song gives an insight into how being in a city where you do not feel at home can impact one's mental health and stability.
Through the verses, the artist mentions how the city is becoming too much to bear, talking about how they cannot win and see no visions. The lyric “These days I can’t see no visions'' can be understood as the singer not being able to see their future in LA anymore, suggesting that they are ready to move on. The second verse talks about New York and how it is a great city, but it wasn't their home. The artist felt more alone in the city that never sleeps than the familiar surroundings of LA. The song ends with the singer questioning their dreams and reality, asking if they were dreaming of leaving the city or dreaming of staying.

I love this song. I grew up so close to them, probably some 5-10 blocks away...so all their songs about LA and their music videos on Ventura hit my soul. I wish I could talk to them about how much Studio City has changed from when we grew up
