Hatsune Miku (初音ミク, Hatsune Miku) is the first installment in the Vocaloid Character Vocal Series released on August 31, 2007. The name of the title and the character of the software was chosen by combining Hatsu (初, First), Ne (音, Sound), and Miku (未来, Future). The data for the voice was created by actually sampling the voice of Saki Fujita, a Japanese voice actress. Unlike general purpose speech synthesizers, the software is tuned to create J-pop songs commonly heard in anime, but it is possible to create songs from other genres.

The lyrics of the song Last night, Good night by Hatsune Miku talks about a person who is dreaming of a beautiful morning spent with a loved one. The first verse talks about how the dreamer sees the face of their loved one in their dreams, but tears continue to flow down their cheeks unnoticed. They have been hiding the feeling of their heartbeats for this person and kept it inside, and it is only in their dreams that they can express these emotions truthfully.
The chorus brings the repetition of the principle melody with the same lyrics, adding that the person holding their hand as they sleep is the subject of their dreams, and saying goodbye is intolerable. The rhythm and melody reinforce the idea of a lullaby, making the verses feel calming and the chorus more emotive.
The second verse talks about how the dreamer cannot say their goodbyes or any of their true feelings to the person they love. They express hope to be able to spend another beautiful morning with the one they love, even if it's just a dream. The last line is "Oyasumi," which means goodnight in Japanese, and wraps up the themes of the song that are of dreaming about love and never wanting to say goodbye.

I'm 30 now and so much has changed since I first heard this song. I remember thinking how sweet and gentle this song was, and the sad nature of the song seemed so surreal, like her voice was so amazing that even this sad tune was a source of joy.
Since those days I've lost everyone I used to hold dear. So many nights spent listening to this song, each time understanding the sadness and desperation a little more. The melancholic joy when I remember those memories we made together. The tears that form in my eyes when I remember that we'll never be together again. The stupid smile I struggle to form when I picture us together, in the little dream world I imagine a part of us will always live together.
Those days are long gone, but the feelings never faded. For those I've never told, and especially for those that I did, that I would never stop loving you. You'll never see this, and life moves so fast I'll forget this tomorrow.
More than anyone else, this song reminds me of you, Nessa. Messy Nessy. It's been years now since I've mentioned you to anyone. You were the Sun I was glad to burn up in, and I'm glad it was you that I fell so far for. Forever is a long time to give your heart to someone, but you'll carry mine even if you've long forgotten it exists.
These comment sections are the only place I can truly express myself, listening to the music that morphed me into what I am today, for better or worse. I'm so grateful for it, but I really miss being able to talk to you instead. Any of you, that are gone now.
Last Night, Good Night.

here is my translation:
soundly sleeping a dream of peace
your face in profile then my cheeks
wet with tears, suddenly flowing
without knowing why
concealed in my breast
this poignant point in time—
last night, good night
last night, good night
tonight, your hand in mine
i will sleep. good night.
if i could just once more
share a morning with you—
the thought of even this tiny hope
itself a miracle
here i am, not saying a word—
i could never say “farewell”
last night, good night
last night, good night
this voice may become old and faint
but its melody will never fade
last night, good night
last night, good night
someday, we will meet it
(i think about our end)—
yet on the night sky i wish
a smile that is eternal
good night

This song is like a time capsule for me. 23 years old now and I clearly remember staying up at night as a pre-teen listening to this song in the dark and just letting myself fall asleep to the sad melody. Hearing it again now is like being transported right back to those days, those small isolated moments of my youth. I wonder if I’ll remember this song in another ten years and say the same thing.
