Brel was born on 8th April 1929 in Schaarbeek, a district of Brussels, and lived half of his life in Paris. He died of lung cancer on 9th October 1978 in Bobigny in the suburbs of Paris, and is buried in the Marquesas Islands.
Although the Brels spoke French, they were of Flemish descent, with some of the family originating from Zandvoorde, near Ieper. Brel's father was co-owner of a cardboard factory and Brel started his professional life at that firm, apparently destined to follow in his father's footsteps. However he had no interest in it, showing instead an interest in the arts, having joined the Catholic-humanist youth organisation Franche Cordée, where he did some singing and acting. At Franche Cordée he met Thérèse Michielsen ('Miche'), and they married in 1950.
In the early 1950s Brel achieved some minor success in Belgium, singing his own songs. A 78rpm record ("La foire"/"Il y a") was released as a result. From 1954 Brel seriously pursued a singing career. He quit his job and moved to Paris, writing music and singing in the city's cabarets and music-halls.. In January 1955 he supported in the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels the performances of the Belgian pop and variety pioneer Bobbejaan Schoepen. After some success his wife and daughters joined him from Belgium. By 1956 he was touring Europe and he recorded the song "Quand on n'a que l'amour", which brought him his first major recognition. He appeared in a show with Maurice Chevalier and Michel Legrand.
By the end of the 1950s Miche and Brel's three daughters moved to Brussels. He and his family led separate lives from then on. Under the influence of his friend Georges Pasquier ('Jojo') and pianists Gérard Jouannest and François Rauber, Brel's style changed. He was no longer a Catholic-humanist troubadour, but sang grimmer songs about love, death, and the struggle that is life. The music became more complex and his themes more diverse, exploring love ("Je t'aime", "Litanies pour un retour"), society ("Les singes", "Les bourgeois", "Jaurès") and spiritual concerns ("Le bon Dieu", "Dites, si c'était vrai", "Fernand"). His work is not limited to one style. He was as proficient in comic compositions ("Le lion", "Comment tuer l'amant de sa femme...") as in more emotional ones ("Voir un ami pleurer", "Fils de...", "Jojo"). He composed and recorded his songs almost exclusively in French, and is widely recognised in French-speaking countries as one of the best French-language composers of all time.
Brel himself occasionally included parts of his songs in Flemish (Dutch), one of the three official languages of Belgium, as in Marieke. He also recorded eight other Flemish versions of songs, such as Mijn vlakke land (Le plat Pays), Laat Me Niet Alleen (Ne me quitte pas), Rosa, De Burgerij (Les Bourgeois), and De Nuttelozen van de Nacht (Les paumés du petit matin). Since his own command of the language was poor, these were translated by Ernst van Altena, renowned translator of French song. Although France was Brel's "spiritual home" and he expressed contradictory statements about his native Belgium, some of his best compositions pay tribute to Belgium.
A very successful theatrical review of his songs, "Jacques Brel is Alive and Living in Paris," was launched in 1968. It featured English translations of his songs, and it was late made into a film.
To English-speaking listeners, Brel's best-known song is probably "Seasons in the Sun," a hit for Terry Jacks in 1973. Its English lyrics are a translation by Rod McKuen of Brel's "Le Moribond."
For twenty years he was a major star gaining recognition beyond French audiences. In 1973 he retreated to French Polynesia, remaining there until 1977 when he returned to Paris and recorded his well-received final album.
A heavy smoker, it was discovered in 1973 that Brel had lung cancer. He died in 1978 and was buried in Calvary Cemetery in Atuona, Hiva Oa, Marquesas Islands, French Polynesia only a few yards away from painter Paul Gauguin.

Je veux voir mes frères
Et mes chiens et mes chats
Et le bord de la mer
À mon dernier repas
Je veux voir mes voisins
Et puis quelques Chinois
En guise de cousins
Et je veux qu'on y boive
En plus du vin de messe
De ce vin si joli
Qu'on buvait en Arbois
Je veux qu'on y dévore
Après quelques soutanes
Une poule faisane
Venue du Périgord
Puis je veux qu'on m'emmène
En haut de ma colline
Voir les arbres dormir
En refermant leurs bras
Et puis, je veux encore
Lancer des pierres au ciel
En criant "Dieu est mort!"
Une dernière fois
À mon dernier repas
Je veux voir mon âne
Mes poules et mes oies
Mes vaches et mes femmes
À mon dernier repas
Je veux voir ces drôlesses
Dont je fus maître et roi
Ou qui furent mes maîtresses
Quand j'aurai dans la panse
De quoi noyer la Terre
Je briserai mon verre
Pour faire le silence
Et chanterai à tue-tête
À la mort qui s'avance
Les paillardes romances
Qui font peur aux nonnettes
Puis je veux qu'on m'emmène
En haut de ma colline
Voir le soir qui chemine
Lentement vers la plaine
Et là, debout encore
J'insulterai les bourgeois
Sans crainte et sans remords
Une dernière fois
Après mon dernier repas
Je veux que l'on s'en aille
Qu'on finisse ripaille
Ailleurs que sous mon toit
Après mon dernier repas
Je veux que l'on m'installe
Assis seul comme un roi
Accueillant ses vestales
Dans ma pipe, je brûlerai
Mes souvenirs d'enfance
Mes rêves inachevés
Mes restes d'espérance
Et je ne garderai
Pour habiller mon âme
Que l'idée d'un rosier
Et qu'un prénom de femme
Puis je regarderai
Le haut de ma colline
Qui danse, qui se devine
Qui finit par sombrer
Et dans l'odeur des fleurs
Qui bientôt s'éteindra
Je sais que j'aurai peur
Une dernière fois
The lyrics of Jacques Brel's "Le Dernier Repas" depict the view of a person who is approaching his last supper. The song talks about his desire to spend his last moments with the things that he loves the most. He wants his loved ones, including his family, pets, and neighbors, to be there with him, and he also desires to have Chinois, the Chinese people, as his cousins. He wants to consume exquisite food and wine and then be taken atop his hill to see the trees sleeping with their arms closed. After that, he wants to throw stones at the sky and proclaim that God is dead.
Further, the song reveals the desire of the singer to see his farm animals once again and meet his former lovers, with whom he was either a master or a partner. After he finishes his meal, he wants to sit all alone, like a king, with his vestals around him, and then he will burn his childhood memories, incomplete dreams, and hopes. He will then concentrate only on a rose bush idea and the name of a woman. As he looks on the hilltop, he knows that he is one step closer to his end, and he will feel fear for the final time.

Non, Jef, t’es pas tout seul
Mais arrête de pleurer
Comme ça devant tout l’monde
Parce qu’une demi-vieille
Parce qu’une fausse blonde
T’a relaissé tomber
Non, Jef, t’es pas tout seul
Mais tu sais qu’tu m’fais honte
A sangloter comme ça
Bêtement devant tout l’monde
Parce qu’une trois quarts putain
T’a claqué dans les mains
Non, Jef, t’es pas tout seul
Mais tu fais honte à voir
Les gens se paient not’ tête
Foutons l’camp de c’trottoir
Viens, Jef, viens, viens, viens!
{Refrain:}
Viens, il me reste trois sous
On va aller s’les boire
Chez la mère Françoise
Viens, Jef, viens
Viens, il me reste trois sous
Et si c’est pas assez
Ben il m’restera l’ardoise
Puis on ira manger
Des moules et puis des frites
Des frites et puis des moules
Et du vin de Moselle
Et si t’es encore triste
On ira voir les filles
Chez la madame Andrée
Paraît qu’y en a d’nouvelles
On r’chantera comme avant
On s’ra bien tous les deux
Comme quand on était jeunes
Comme quand c’était le temps
Que j’avais d’l’argent
Non, Jef, t’es pas tout seul
Mais arrête tes grimaces
Soulève tes cent kilos
Fais bouger ta carcasse
Je sais qu’t’as le cœur gros
Mais il faut le soulever, Jef
Non Jef t’es pas tout seul
Mais arrête de sangloter
Arrête de te répandre
Arrête de répéter
Qu’t’es bon à t’ outre à l’eau
Qu’t’es bon à te pendre
Non, Jef, t’es pas tout seul
Mais c’est plus un trottoir
Ça d’vient un cinéma
Où les gens viennent te voir
Viens, Jef, allez viens, viens!
{Refrain:}
Viens, il me reste ma guitare
Je l’allumerai pour toi
Et on s’ra espagnols
Jef, viens, viens
Comme quand on était mômes
Même que j’aimais pas ça
T’imiteras l’rossignol
Jef,
Puis on s’trouvera un banc
On parlera d’l’Amérique
Où c’est qu’on va aller, tu sais
Quand on aura du fric
Jef, viens
Et si t’es encore triste
Ou rien qu’si t’en as l’air
J’te raconterai comment
Tu d’viendras Rockefeller
On s’ra bien tous les deux
On r’chantera comme avant
Comme quand on était beaux
Jef,
Comme quand c’était l’temps
D’avant qu’on soit poivrots
Allez viens Jef, viens
Ouais! Ouais, Jef, ouais, viens!
