Years Ago
Jimmie Rodgers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was happy, oh so happy
Down in Mississipi way
I was livin' with my papy
Fifteen years ago today

When I left him in the gloamin'
I recall I heard him say
You'll be sorry that you roamin'
Fifteen years ago today

I met a slicker from the city
And he leaved my life astray
How he fooled me was a pity
Fifteen years ago today

He said I could make a fortune
If I did as he would say
But we ended up in prison
Fifteen years ago today

Now I'm sittin' by my own son
For my errors I must pay
I recall I wasn't lonesome
Fifteen years a go today

Overall Meaning

The song "Years Ago" by Jimmie Rodgers is a poignant reflection on regret and nostalgia. The singer of the song begins by reminiscing about a time when he was happy living in Mississippi with his father. He remembers leaving his father one evening and being warned that he would regret his decision to roam. The next verse reveals that the singer met a man from the city who promised him wealth and success. However, this individual led him astray and ultimately involved him in criminal activities, resulting in the singer's imprisonment. Now, fifteen years later, the singer is sitting with his own son and reflecting on the mistakes he made in the past.

The song is layered with themes of regret and the cost of making poor choices. The narration is retrogressive and the singer seems to be looking back to times when he was content and happy with his father than now that he has his own son with whom he is tasked with correcting the same mistakes he made. He also shows how persuasive people can take advantage of others to achieve their goals, and the consequences that can result from blind trust.

When you loved performing like Jimmy, you go to the end. He was a brave man and who would know we'd be watching him today on You Tube. The internet is wonderful when used for intertainment like this.

I've always loved Jimmie Rodgers' music. I really like "I've got the old TB Blues" which is my favorite Jimmie Rodgers' song. Just wish they had a cure for TB back in the 1930's and he could have recorded many more songs especially about trains since he referred to himself as the "singing brakeman". RIP my brother.

Old Fogey

Rusty I just found out they didn't have an antibiotic cure for tb until Nov of 1944! My brother and mother got tb before my birth luckily they were both cured without relapse!
