In the late '60s and early '70s, Baez came into her songwriting own, penning many songs (most notably "Diamonds & Rust," a nostalgic piece about her ill-fated romance with Bob Dylan, and "Sweet Sir Galahad," a song about sister Mimi Fariña's ( of Richard & Mimi Fariña fame) second marriage, and continued to meld her songcraft with topical issues. She was outspoken in her disapproval of the Vietnam war and later the CIA-backed coups in many Latin American countries.
She was also instrumental in the Civil Rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King on many occassions and being jailed for her beliefs. In 1963, her performance of "We Shall Overcome" at the Lincoln Memorial just prior to Dr. King's famous "I Have A Dream..." speech helped confirm the song as the Civil Rights anthem.
In December 1972, she traveled to Hanoi, North Vietnam, and was caught in that country's "Christmas Campaign," in which the U.S. bombed the city more times than any other during the entire war. While pregnant with her only son, Gabriel, she performed a handful of songs in the middle of the night on day one of the 1969 Woodstock festival. She is considered the "Queen of Folk" for being at the forefront of the 1960s folk revival and inspiring generations of female folksingers that followed. On July 28, 2019, following dates across Europe, Baez performed her final concert at Madrid's Teatro Real. In January 2021, Baez received a 2020 Kennedy Center Honor.
Esquinazo Del Guerrillero
Joan Baez Lyrics

Música de Rolando Alarcón. De Chile)
Las cinco ya van a dar
Las cinco de la mañana
Abreme la puerta mi alma
Que he ganado una batalla
Que he ganado una batalla
Te busco en la madrugada
Dáme tu pecho, paloma.
Dáme tu pecho, paloma
Sin olvidar bien amada
Flor que no se abre a su dueño
Se apaga en la madrugada
Al filo de un esquinazo
Como el lucero en tu almohada
Paloma why tú entre mis brazos.
Palomita entre mis brazos
Punteando se viene el alba
Oye el rumor de las armas
Que ya suenan los balazos
Que ya suenan los balazos
Escucha lo que yo siento
No vuela la alondra en vano
Si en brazos la lleva el viento.
The lyrics to Joan Baez's song Esquinazo del Guerrillero are a poetic and emotional tribute to the sacrifices and victories of guerrilla fighters in Chile. The song follows the perspective of a guerrilla fighter who has just won a battle at dawn and is seeking comfort and support from his lover. The opening lines set the scene of a new day dawning, and the fighter seeks solace in the embrace of his lover, represented by the metaphor of a dove. The dove, which is a symbol of peace and love, is a contrast to the violence and danger that the fighter faces. The line "Flor que no se abre a su dueño / Se apaga en la madrugada" (A flower that does not open to its owner / Fades in the early morning) creates a sense of urgency and emphasizes the importance of connection and love in times of struggle.
The lyrics continue to speak of the sounds of the impending battle and the fighter's determination to continue fighting for his beliefs. The image of the alondra, or lark, being carried by the wind emphasizes the power of determination and persistence in the face of adversity. The song ends on an optimistic note, with the image of the dove representing hope and the possibility of a peaceful future.
