Four
John Coltrane Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Of the wonderful things that you get out of life there are four.
And they may not be many but nobody needs any more.
Of the many facts making the list of life,
Truth takes the lead.
And to relax knowing the gist of life,
It's truth you need.

Then the second is honor and happiness makes number three.
When you put them together you know what the last one must be.
Baby so truth, honor and happiness
And one thing more,
Meaning only wonderful, wonderful love that'll make four.

And one thing more,
Meaning love and that's the real score and more than enough when times are tough and poor.
They may not comprise a lot

Still (you) only got those four.
And there ain't no more.

Overall Meaning

In John Coltrane's song "4" the lyrics touch upon four aspects of life that are truly important - truth, honor, happiness, and love. The artist talks about how one does not need anything more in life than these four things. According to the lyrics, "Truth takes the lead" which suggests that truth is the most crucial amongst the aforementioned virtues. In order to have a meaningful life, one needs to relax knowing the gist of life and it's truth that we need. The artist emphasizes on the importance of living an honest life and being true to oneself.

Moving onto the second aspect of life, honor makes the number two position whereas happiness comes in at number three. The lyrics encourage putting honor and happiness together which would lead to the fourth and most important aspect - love. Love is the most valuable asset one can possess in life. There’s always something that comes along that makes you realize Coltrane is even better than what you already thought

This is some amazing shit!  We should all be deeply grateful that things like exist -- there will NEVER be another Coltrane and any example of his work is priceless.  And it's definitely Philly Joe Jones.  Trane wasn't working with Elvin during this time -- Philly JJ was his go to drummer.

This is a great piece of music with historical significance, as with anything associated with John Coltrane. Thanks for posting this!!

Great clip, glad I stumbled on it. Trane is one of the a very few artist that you can tell in one note like Miles. I feel an Elvin like presence in this clip... here is what I think. Trane had reel to reel recorders he practiced with. They were sitting in a hotel room on the road somewhere and just got high. They were having a drink and Trane hit the record and picked up his horn. Listen to how laid back the groove is. Cats was wasted hahahaha...

@michaelroach4219

very nice. I especially liked Coltrane's playing during this time period.

musikaudios tudo bom?
