Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Julius La Rosa's song Eh Cumpari are in the Calabrian dialect of Southern Italy. The song is essentially an instrumental piece of music punctuated by the repeated refrain, "Eh cumpari, ci vo sunari?" which loosely translates to "Hey buddy, you want to play music?" The lyrics then proceed to describe the various instruments that can be played, beginning with the friscalettu (a type of flute) and moving on to the saxophone, mandolin, violin, trumpet, and trombone. Each instrument is introduced with a question about how it is played and then answered with a short musical phrase.

Overall, the song is a celebration of music and the joy it brings, as well as a tribute to the musical heritage of Southern Italy. The repeated refrain serves as an invitation for anyone willing to join in on the musical fun, regardless of their skill level or familiarity with the instruments being played. It's a lighthearted and playful song that celebrates the power of music to bring people together and lift their spirits.

I've just discovered this song and this gorgeous singer. I'm English, but I've lived in Italy for 25 years. I adore traditional Italian songs, and this song had me dancing around the room. I'll listen to it over and over again! It makes me feel happy!

@tambrosia

this song was sung at every wedding, holy communion, confirmation, reception.
Heck even sung at the after burial service. Loved it when the old guys would sing it and slip in those dirty hand signals, like in the Godfather wedding scene.
Listening to the song is better than reading it....but watch the godfather wedding scene so you get the hand gestues....
