Fancy Pants Manifesto
Lemon Demon Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

(Sausages are good.
Sausages are good.
We are all sausages.)

(One, two, three, four.
One, two, three, four.)

Is this my chance, for goodness sake,
To make the point I've tried to make
For all my lifetime, give or take a year?
And now it comes as no surprise:
The world gets lost, the world gets wise.
So dot your Ts, and cross your Is, my dear.

And it's a golden opportunity
To take a stand and claim immunity
Against the threat of more community service.
And you would think that they'd catch on to us.
The odds are stacked and vaguely nocuous.
Together we will make the octopus nervous.

We don't have guns, we don't have knives,
But we've been waiting all our lives.
And wait until the day arrives, we will.
We don't pretend we're fighting crime.
We see the world in lemon lime.
The only casualty's the time we kill.

But still, a lot of things are problematical.
There is an urge to wax fanatical,
But we will not fall prey to radicalism.
Well never mind, ‘cause here's another thing.
You won't believe what we're discovering,
And you can see it through the hovering prism.

This is the fancy pants manifesto.
This is the fancy pants manifesto.
This is the fancy pants manifesto,
And now you know.

This is the fancy pants manifesto.
This is the fancy pants manifesto.

This is the fancy pants manifesto,
And now you know.

Overall Meaning

In "Fancy Pants Manifesto," it appears that Lemon Demon, the alternative rock band, is making an ironic statement about identity and revolution. The song begins with a seemingly random declaration about the goodness of sausages, but this line may serve to illuminate how easily we slip into patterns and systems of thought without our awareness, whether it be about something as banal as our food choices or something as complicated as our political affiliations.

The second verse further hints at this, as the singer questions whether this is their chance to "make the point [they've] tried to make for all [their] lifetime," yet is seemingly ambivalent about what exactly that point is. The line "The world gets lost, the world gets wise" perhaps suggests that the more we learn about the world, the less we understand it, or that our knowledge is constantly in a state of flux.

The chorus has a sense of defiance and celebration, with the singer declaring that this is the "fancy pants manifesto," a sort of unorthodox declaration of identity and individuality. The last verse further plays with this idea, with the singer stating that they have been "waiting all [their] lives" for something, but that thing has yet to arrive. This sense of waiting and anticipation could be seen as a reflection of our current political climate of unrest and uncertainty, where it feels as though we are constantly on the brink of something without knowing what that something is.

Overall, "Fancy Pants Manifesto" is a seemingly nonsensical song that nevertheless has a deeper resonance with themes of identity, revolution, and uncertainty.
