On January 26, 1986, French humorist Coluche, who had set up Les Restos du Cœur a few months earlier, invited a number of artists and public figures to appear on television as a promotional move. The band, whose line-up was never the same, was dubbed "Les Enfoirés" in reference to one of Coluche's catchwords. After Coluche died in a motorbike accident (June 19, 1986) his widow, Véronique Colucci, called on those who had participated to continue his actions, and the band was revived for a further television show. The concept has since evolved into an annual concert, bringing together up to forty artists and celebrities from various backgrounds. The funds raised by the concerts and derived records under the name "Enfoirés" are donated to Les Restos du Cœur.
One of the key features of Les Enfoirés is "La Chanson des Enfoirés", a song which became a sort of hymn to the charity, written by Jean-Jacques Goldman, a long-time supporter of the organisation.

The lyrics to Les Enfoirés's song "Quand la musique est bonne" convey a deep connection and passion for music. The first paragraph reflects the songwriter's personal experiences and love for playing the guitar (Gibson) and exploring the Tobacco Road, a famous blues song and a symbol of the roots of American music. The mention of the "caisses" resonating suggests that the music is the only thing that truly resonates with the artist. Additionally, the line about traveling as a stowaway represents the desire to escape and find inspiration through music.
The second paragraph delves into the emotional impact of music. The reference to "champs de coton" (cotton fields) in the artist's memory is a nod to the African-American origins of blues music and its association with struggle and resilience. The "three notes of blues" represents a simple but powerful expression of pain and love. The phrase "when I am too short, when I am too late" implies that music serves as a remedy in difficult times and offers a way to tell another story or find solace.
The chorus emphasizes the transformative power of good music. It states that when the music is good, it gives, resonates, and guides the artist's steps. It is seen as authentic and not deceptive. The repetition and emphasis on the goodness of music in the lyrics reinforce the importance of finding and embracing music that truly moves and inspires.
The third paragraph expresses the artist's current state of mind. The lyrics suggest a lack of love, time, and humor, symbolized by the absence of these elements. The line "I only have a nail, a spark" indicates a feeling of being weighed down by heavy burdens, represented by lead objects that break the artist's wings. However, despite these challenges, the mention of swing, referencing a style of music known for its uplifting rhythm, and a bit of Elvis Presley's influence, suggests that even a little bit of music, feeling, and volume is enough to escape and find freedom.
The repetition of the chorus throughout the song reinforces the central theme of the transformative power of good music. It serves as a reminder that when the music is good, it gives, resonates, and guides the steps of the artist. The repeated "sonne" signifies the continued sounding and presence of music in the artist's life. The lyrics evoke a sense of longing, appreciation, and reliance on music as a source of inspiration and resilience.
In summary, Les Enfoirés's "Quand la musique est bonne" emphasizes the deep emotional connection and transformative power of music. It reflects personal experiences, the influence of blues and iconic musicians, and the recognition that even in challenging times, music can offer solace, inspiration, and a pathway to freedom.
