In her native town of Rosario, Sinaloa, Beltrán completed her secretarial studies while she participated in many singing competitions. She then moved to Mexico City where she was discovered while working at the radio station XEW, and never went back to Rosario again.
She married Alfredo Leal, a matador and film actor, and with him had two children: María Elena Leal, who is also a singer, and José Leal. She entered the world of film in 1954 starring in El tesoro de la muerte. After participating in dozens of films, most of them musicals, she obtained a role in the telenovela Mi rival with Saby Kamalich. In 1976 and 1984 she hosted the musical shows Noches tapatías and El estudio de Lola Beltrán respectively.
Beltrán is still considered with Lucha Reyes the most successful ranchera-music singer of all time. She was the first ranchera singer to perform at the Palacio de Bellas Artes. She also performed at the Olympia music hall in Paris, the Tchaikovsky Hall of Moscow and the Conservatory of Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg) in the former Soviet Union.
Soon after recording Disco del Siglo with Lucha Villa and Amalia Mendoza "La Tariácuri" (produced by Juan Gabriel) she died of a massive pulmonary embolism at the Ángeles hospital of Mexico City.

el cielo esta encapotao
vaqueros para el corral
arrien a todo el ganao.
La noche se viene encima
procuren pronto llegar
mañana en la madrugada
Ay, ay ay ay bendito sea el cielo
llorando te quero muchísimo mas y mas
Ay ay ay esta noche mi tejado
tendrá un olorcito a trago
ay la lluvia me irá a arrullar.
Las primeras gotas fueron
las de un fuerte chaparrón
las que hoy caerá en mi sombrero
me alegraran el corazon.
Ay ay ay el corazón, el corazón
In Lola Beltrán's song "El Aguacero," the lyrics describe a stormy night on a ranch. The sky is cloudy and the lightning illuminates the scene. Cowboys are called to gather the livestock safely in the corral before the storm hits. The night falls quickly, and they hurry to get home before the downpour. The next morning, they will begin working in the fields as usual.
The chorus of the song expresses the singer's love and gratitude for the rain. She thanks heaven for the rain, which brings life to the land and helps the crops grow. The rain will also lull her to sleep with its soothing sound on the roof. The singer's heart is also mentioned, perhaps suggesting that the rain has a romantic effect on her.
Overall, the song portrays the storm as both dangerous and beneficial, a force of nature to be respected but also celebrated.
