Marokkanen, Jordanezen
Provincialen en studenten
Langs de kant weer kind staan wezen
Samen lachen, samen zwaaien
Samen lachen, samen zwaaien
The song "De geur van azijn" by Maarten van Roozendaal tells the story of how one's perception of a city can change depending on their state of mind. When everything seems to be closing in and the clouds in their mind darken their outlook, the city becomes a monster that stinks of vinegar. They feel small and suffocated as they walk through the streets. However, when they witness the diversity present during the annual Sinterklaas parade, with Turks, Vietnamezen, Marokkanen, Jordanezen, provincialen, and students all gathered to watch, their perspective changes, and they see the city as something to be cherished.
The lyrics suggest that the city may not always be a pleasant or easy place to live in. Still, it is home to various individuals, lifestyles, experiences, and emotions, all of which make it worth loving. The song encourages listeners to accept the city's imperfections and to look beyond their troubles and try to recognize its beauty.
