Pata De Perro
Maldita Vecindad Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Era el mas jalador
No había rival
Para este ganan
Pata de perro por aquí
Pata de perro por allá
Mario era el nombre
De este buen carnal
Ya no regresara
El tiempo se aprovecho
Y todo lo transformo
Viejo el barrio
Viejo hasta el danzon
Un amigo se caso
A otro panza le salio
Nueva flota apareció
Y en la esquina
Ya nada es igual
Era mejor viajar
Un buen día llego el rumor
Que un amigo de un señor
En un barco se lo topo
Que había estado en Nueva York
Y bailado en Japón
Que en Brasil se enamoro
Y en Haiti toco el tambor
A Mandela conoció
Y en URSS se emborracho
Nadie supo si es verdad
Sus amigos suelen recordar
Que el era un buen carnal
Que decidió viajar
The lyrics of Maldita Vecindad's song "Pata De Perro" tell the story of Mario, a guy who was known as the "most puller" of the fleet; he had no rival to him. He was called "Pata de perro," meaning "dog paw," because he traveled around a lot, constantly moving from place to place. However, Mario is now gone, and the time has transformed everything. Old neighborhoods became old even "hasta el danzon," or "to the danzon," referring to the traditional Mexican dance.
The transformation of the area appears to have resulted from some of Mario's friends moving away or changing. One got married, another became overweight, and soon a new fleet emerged that had already surpassed Mario's influence. Now, Mario is known only through reminiscences and rumors of his travels. Stories of his adventures seem to have taken on mythical proportions, with tales of him hanging out with Nelson Mandela in South Africa, getting drunk in the Soviet Union, and falling in love in Brazil and Haiti.
The song seems to be an ode to the joy and thrill of traveling, and how it can leave a lasting impact and transform not only oneself but also the places one visits. The lyrics also convey a sense of sentimentality and loss, as things change and people move on. Mario, once the most influential person around, is now just a memory, a legend told by his old friends who remember him fondly.
