María la Portuguesa is a song that tells the story of a Portuguese woman named Maria who fell in love with an Andalusian man. The song is a fado, a traditional Portuguese style of music that is known for its mournful, melancholic tone. The lyrics describe Maria's love affair with the man, how they met in a night of wine and heat, and how she was swept off her feet by his passion. The beautiful but tragic love story is set against the backdrop of moonlit nights filled with the scent of clavel flowers, and the river that flows between Ayamonte and Villareal.
As the song progresses, we learn that Maria's lover was a sailor who left her to go on a contraband mission. Maria was left alone, longing for his return. One night, in the shadowy darkness by the river, a gunshot was heard, and her lover was gone forever. The heartbreaking loss of her lover is expressed through Maria's longing cries in the fado style of singing, as she mourns the loss of his eyes, his lips, and his presence. The song is a poignant tribute to the power of love and the pain of loss.
Overall, María la Portuguesa is a powerful, haunting song that captures the essence of the fado tradition. Its mournful melody and tragic lyrics make it a classic in the Portuguese and Spanish music scenes.
