For the Olympic Games of Athens 2004 she collaborated with Sting for the duet "A Thousand Years", released on the official pop album of the Athens Olympics Unity, where fado is sung in both English and Portuguese.
Mariza is considered by many as a more contemporary follower of Amalia Rodrigues, and has covered a number of her songs.
In 2003 she became the "Winner in the Europe category" of the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music.

Tasco Da Mouraria
Mariza Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The song "Tasco Da Mouraria" by Mariza is a heartfelt tribute to the Mouraria neighborhood of Lisbon, Portugal, where fado music was born. The lyrics describe the singer as a child, staying up late at night and feeling a deep connection to the fado music that is heard from the local taverns. The singer's father calls her to bed, but she lingers in the music, feeling a mix of pride and longing for a new love that has entered her life.
In the second verse, the singer describes her love for the guitar, which she compares to the soothing comfort of a lover's embrace. The dream of singing fado in the early morning hours is described as being born in a "tasco," or small tavern, in the Mouraria neighborhood.
Overall, "Tasco Da Mouraria" is a beautiful meditation on the power of music to transport us to a different time and place, and to connect us to the deepest parts of our souls.

Cresce a noite pelas ruas de Lisboa
The night grows as it spreads through the streets of Lisbon
E os meninos como eu foram dormir
And boys like me have gone to sleep
Só eu fico com o sonho que já voa
Only I am left with a dream that is already fleeting
Nesta estranha minha forma de sentir
In this strange way of feeling that is uniquely mine
Deixo o quarto com passinhos de menina
I leave the room with quiet, gentle footsteps like a young girl
Num silêncio que respeita o mais sagrado
In a silence that respects the most sacred
Quando o brilho dos meus olhos na cortina
When the gleam in my eyes catches the curtain
Se deleitam ao ouvir cantar o fado
As I delight in hearing the fado being sung
Meu amor, vai-te deitar, já é tarde
My love, go to bed, it's already late
Diz meu pai sempre que vem perto de mim
My father always says this when he comes near me
Nesse misto de orgulho e de saudade
In this mixture of pride and nostalgia
De quem sente um novo amor no meu jardim
Of someone who feels a new love in my garden
E adormeço nos seus braços de guitarra
And I fall asleep in the arms of the guitar
Doce embalo que renasce a cada dia
A sweet lullaby that is reborn every day
Esse sonho de cantar a madrugada
That dream of singing into the morning
Que foi berço num tasco da Mouraria
