Her self-titled debut album, Mathilde Santing, came out in 1982 and she gas released well over fifteen studio albums since, most of them sung in English, although she sometimes performs and records in her mother tongue as well. Known for her whispery and vulnerable vocal style, Santing is a prominent gay role model in The Netherlands. She sang at the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1998 Gay Games in Amsterdam.
Santing's biggest chart success came in 1999 with the lush ballad 'Wonderful Life', which hit #6 in the Dutch Top 40. The song was taken from the 1999 album To Others To One, which is her highest charting album in her native Netherlands to date, reaching #4 in the Dutch album charts.

Waarom
In Mathilde Santing's song "Kaal," she discusses the absence of poetry and the loss of its power in our lives. The first verse introduces the idea that poetry has left us, and although we still have words, they lack the ability to convey emotion and meaning. As a result, we can only talk about why poetry left our lives.
The second verse focuses on the inability of words to evoke genuine emotion, and the limited ability of language to communicate sensory experiences. Only "Kaal" rhymes with empty and still) exemplifies this point. Words have become limited, and can only express a sense of emptiness and silence.
The final verse talks about how even mundane things, such as a pot of soup, have lost their ability to be extraordinary or poetic. The lack of poetic language takes away from our ability to see the magic in everyday things. The repeated phrase "rijmt op waarom" (rhymes with why) serves as a reminder that we are left questioning why the beauty of poetry, and its ability to enrich our lives, has been taken from us.
Overall, "Kaal" is a haunting exploration of the loss of poetry and its power in our lives. It suggests a world devoid of beauty and meaning, where even the most mundane things cannot be appreciated.
