Born to a pianist mother and the director of a music academy, she took part in several singing competitions as a teenager. She was first noticed on the international scene when she played in the musical comedy Starmania in Paris.
Starting with her first album, Danser, in 1986 on the tiny Franc'Amour label, she was noted for strong, heartfelt songs. This was the first of her ten solo albums.
She was best known in her later years for her role in a TV talent show for young singers, Nouvelle Star (New Star).
She returned to the stage in Brussels in early May 2018 to take part in a concert in tribute to the late Jacques Brel, one of Belgium's most famous singer-songwriters. She died days later.
C'Est Magique

Leurs "Cadillacs" sont de l'année
Leurs dessous en soie brodée
Leurs bijoux de chez "Cartier"
Si leurs lentilles sont "bleu-fumé"
Leurs bronzages "hyper-filtrés"
Leurs poitrines sont remontées
Leurs liftings très bien tirés
Ces nouvelles "stars"
Jeunes sur le tard
Sortent de chez moi
Dépoussiérées
J'leur fais des corps de bébé
C'est magique...
C'est magique...
Un chirurgien
Adroit de ses mains
Fait des miracles sur les années
J'efface l'emprise du passé
C'est magique...
C'est magique...
Quand viendra notre heure
Devant le créateur
Sidéré, soufflé,
Il dira : j'ai dû me tromper
Là, t'as rien trouvé
Tu n'sais pas les réparer
The lyrics to Maurane's song C'Est Magique critique the obsession with physical appearance and the plastic surgery industry, particularly in Hollywood. The first verse describes the superficial traits of the wealthy and famous, such as their expensive cars and jewelry, but notes that their bodies and features have undergone alterations through surgery. The chorus emphasizes the transformative power of plastic surgery, with the singer claiming to give clients "baby bodies" with a "magic" touch. The second verse takes on a more cynical tone, suggesting that even with all the physical work done, the inevitability of death looms, and that surgery cannot fix matters of the heart.
The song's lyrics seem to argue that society's fixation on physical perfection and youth is both vain and ultimately futile. Through the use of a catchy melody, a mix of upbeat and melancholic sections, and an ironic chorus, Maurane is able to create a song that is at once entertaining and thought-provoking. The song encourages listeners to think more deeply about the pressures imposed on people by society's emphasis on appearance, and the potential consequences of seeking out a "perfect" image.
