Born to a pianist mother and the director of a music academy, she took part in several singing competitions as a teenager. She was first noticed on the international scene when she played in the musical comedy Starmania in Paris.
Starting with her first album, Danser, in 1986 on the tiny Franc'Amour label, she was noted for strong, heartfelt songs. This was the first of her ten solo albums.
She was best known in her later years for her role in a TV talent show for young singers, Nouvelle Star (New Star).
She returned to the stage in Brussels in early May 2018 to take part in a concert in tribute to the late Jacques Brel, one of Belgium's most famous singer-songwriters. She died days later.
Sur Un Prélude De Bach
Maurane Lyrics

The opening lines of Maurane's song "Sur Un Prélude De Bach" describe the strong emotional reaction that the singer experiences when they hear Glenn Gould's rendition of Bach's Prelude. This reaction transports them in their mind to the port of Le Havre and the rundown, makeshift buildings and heavy cargo being repaired there. The singer also sees the image of oil tanks, torches, and cranes. As the song progresses, the singer reflects on their failed relationships, mistakes, and emotional baggage. They address a former lover, talking about their contentious relationship, with the singer seeing themselves as clingy and dependent, while their partner is more independent.
However, the recurring element of the song is the beauty and power of music despite the harsh realities of life. Through Glenn Gould's interpretation of Bach's Prelude, the singer can see the beauty of the world and its unlimited potential. They even go so far as to say they would give up many other beloved musical icons, such as Ray Charles, Mozart, and "La vie en rose," for the simple pleasure of listening to Glenn Gould's interpretation of Bach's Prelude.
Overall, the song portrays a complicated mix of emotions and themes, blending feelings of longing, regret, and wistfulness with the power and beauty of music.

On a prelude by Bach (Maurane)
When I hear this Bach prelude
By Glen Gould, my reason flies
Towards the port of Le Havre and the barracks
And the heavy freighters that we patch up
And the flares, the wacky cranes
Diesel tanks
You who ran in the puddles
Me and my head slapping
I who believed you to be my thing, my beast
I was just a pot of glue
When I hear this Bach prelude
By Glen Gould, my reason flies
And all these loves that go haywire
And the heavy sorrows, the sorrows that we tinker with
And all my zodiac mistakes
And my compass swings
You, your feet in the puddles
Me, and my head is slapping
I took the tugs for gondolas
And me, I drag my pan
In this dump of dreams in a pack
That we sell at the price of oil
For white-collar workers and corbacs
Who don't give a damn about Mozart, Bach
I would give Ray Charles, Mozart in bulk
La vie en rose, rock'n roll
All these flats and all these hiccups
For Glen Gould in this prelude to Bach.
