Sounds like two people having a existential crisis. Barbie is realizing that her life and relationships are a plastic facsimile of a happy life. Ken has also or is realizing the same thing. but is trying to desperately block it out with partying. It could almost be a reprise of the original song. Her and ken start out excited and having fun in the original, but as the party dies down and the alcohol withers away there left their own crippling depression.

@Words I agree. I'm sure the artists were aware that Barbie was a symbol of beauty. They're not American so we can speculate that it is also a satire about American culture and uses Barbie as a symbol of sexual liberation. I will be your doll if and only if you say I'm always yours. Whether they intended to or not the song makes it clear that a woman can be sexually aggressive and still be submissive at the same time and even if she's wrapped in plastic, it's still her choice. We don't actually live in a Barbie world and she is not a blonde single girl. So obviously you can't take the song too seriously but I was 15 when the song came out and I'm sure they had some idea that some of these thoughts would pop up in my mind the first time I heard the song.

I grew up during the 70s and 80s and it was a thing. The Tipper Gore thing in the US was later, for sure. But that's not what I'm talking about.

It was never edited or censored and twice in the song he says "who the fuck are you?"and that song has been on the radio for decades. Elvis offended a lot of people. Black music offended a lot of people. Censorship came around this time when they acknowledge that children are human. Children had no rights prior to the mid-70s . They were considered pets. parents had complete control over what kind of music their children listen to NFL radio station didn't like what was in a song they just didn't play it at all. Most 70s Rock is about sex and drugs.

The original song is already super sad. Part of the brilliance of the original is that it's literally two songs:
One is a tonally happy song about literally barbie dolls.
The other is about women as toys for men.

Impact is greater with the original as the tone stands in stark contrast to the underlying message.

Honestly, this has always struck me as a sad song hidden behind glitter and smiles. You can have all the beauty in the world, but who could possibly enjoy being a plastic puppet?

That was actually kind of the point of the original; it's just with most of us who listened to it as kids, we didn't realize it. I thought the song was fucking annoying when it first came out, but as I've gotten older and listened to it... yeah, yeah I get it.

Not really. The first part is mostly accurate, but your take on Kens role is wrong. He’s depressed and nihilistic, he knows everything’s fake and shallow, but instead of dealing with reality he wants to hide from it and drown his depression in drugs, parties, and alcohol. They’ve both come to the same sad realizations, but are responding in different ways.
