The lyrics of Mijares's song "Alfonsina y el Mar" depict the story of a woman named Alfonsina who walks alone by the seashore which leads her to the deep waters of the sea. As she walks on the "soft sand that the sea washes," she leaves her mark but never returns. It seems like she was carrying some emotional pain that she didn't share with anyone because her heart was burdened with old pain that silenced her voice. However, she finds solace in the song of the seashells that help her rest.
The second stanza of the song personifies Alfonsina's journey and describes how she travels towards her destination, where the old winds and the sound of the sea will accompany her. Alfonsina departs from this world and enters a world full of unknown wonders: five little mermaids take her by the way of algae and corals, and she meets fluorescent seahorses. Finally, the creatures of the sea welcome her to play and explore new things along with them.
