He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.

Certes, je me suis avili
En la couchant dans notre lit.
Le plus petit hôtel miteux
Eut pour cela convenu mieux
Car vous ignorez, je parie,
Que la garce poussait des cris.
Oui, cette bouillante Artémis
N'arrêtait plus de crier " Bis! "
The song "Je n'ai jamais aimé que vous" by Pierre Perret tells the story of a man who confesses his infidelity to his lover. He admits that although he has been faithful for twenty years, he has recently engaged in an affair with a younger woman who is "beneath" his lover. He expresses his shame and regret, acknowledging that his lover is the only one he has ever truly loved. However, he also reveals that he found the sexual experience with the other woman exciting, and his desire for her was fueled by the "mid-life crisis" he was undergoing. He admits that he feels dirty and disgusted with himself, and that he may seek to assuage his guilt by committing an act of cowardice.
The lyrics of this song are filled with complex emotions, including love, desire, shame, and regret. The singer's confession of his infidelity is frank and honest, laying bare the complicated feelings that come with being unfaithful. The inclusion of details about the physical aspect of the affair, such as the way the woman's body looked and the sounds she made, adds to the rawness of the emotions being expressed.
Overall, "Je n'ai jamais aimé que vous" is a powerful and emotional song that delves into the complexities of human relationships and the difficulties of maintaining fidelity in the face of temptation.
