He spent a long part of his childhood in the café which his parents owned, where he learned work jargon and slang. At the age of 14 he signed up to the conservatoire de musique de Toulouse and to a dramatic arts institute. In the mean time, he set up his first band of 4 musicians in his own name, with whom he played at events throughout the region. In 1957, he was snapped up by Eddie Barclay who signed him on. It was in the studio of Barclay where he met his future wife, Simone Mazaltarim.
In 1958 Perret carried on touring round Parisian cabaret bars and crossed France and Africa as a part of the American group, The Platters. In Novemeber that year, a pleurisy forced him to take two years off in a sanatorium.
A master of the subtleties of the French language and French slang (he even rewrote some of Jean de La Fontaine's fables), his songs are often cheeky (for example Le zizi (The willy)) , asking questions in a seemingly naive child's tone, but has written more serious political songs, such as La bête est revenue, La petite kurde, Vert de Colère ou Lily.
La philatélie

C'est ma bonne amie
Mais sa grande passion
C'est sa collection
Oui mais la folie
S'en est emparée
C'est de philatélie
Dont elle est timbrée
Marché du Rond-Point
Pour acheter
Un coin daté
Du marais Poitevin
Puis on courut ventre à terre
Aux puces de Saint-Ouen
Marchander une dentellière
Du Bas-Limousin
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
La fille à Mélie
La p'tite Coralie (oui)
Celle qu'est si jolie? (oui)
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
La p'tite Coralie
La fille à Mélie?
C'est la philatélie
Je lui cause de tubes
De stars, de feuilletons
De films et de pubs
D'exploits de champions
Le seul truc sublime
Qui peut l'emballer
C'est le un centime
Cérès dentelé
Je l'ai amenée au Gabon
Filmer les gibbons
C'est ainsi chemin faisant
Qu'on a vu Tarzan
Sans trembler devant ce dieu
Elle lui dit tout de go
"Tarzan n'as-tu pas quelques
Timbres du Congo?"
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
La p'tite Coralie
La fille à Mélie
C'est la philatélie
Elle rêve que de sites
De trésors incas
D' la belle Aphrodite
Du Titicaca
Les lions, les zèbres
De la Tanzanie
Défilent sur les timbres
Qui hantent ses nuits
Quand j'ai gagné au loto
Nous allâmes partout
De l'Argentine à Tokyo
D'Irlande au Pérou
On n'a vu que des séries
Non oblitérées
Dans les postes des pays
Qu'on devait visiter
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
La p'tite Coralie
La fille à Mélie
C'est la philatélie
Bref ce tour du monde
Nous a affranchis
Des îles de la Sonde
Jusqu'à Karachi
Des timbres d'iguane
Aux Galapagos
De ceux de la savane
Aux rhinocéros
À Mexico en mission
On a vu Zorro
Il jugea qu'une telle passion
Mérite un cadeau
Il dit au sergent Garcia
"Trouve dans mon tiroir
Ce vieux timbre où Zapatta
Brandit son pétard"
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
La fille Amélie
La p'tite Coralie (oui)
Celle qu'est si jolie? (oui)
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
Qu'est-ce qu'elle aime
La p'tite Coralie
La fille à Mélie?
C'est la philatélie
The song "La philatélie" by Pierre Perret is about the singer's friend, Mélie, who is passionate about collecting stamps. However, her passion has turned into an obsession - she is "timbrée" or crazy about philately. The singer describes how Mélie takes him to different markets in Paris, such as the Marché du Rond-Point and the Puces de Saint-Ouen, to find rare stamps from various regions, including Marais Poitevin and Bas-Limousin. They even go to Gabon to film gibbons, but Mélie's only concern is whether Tarzan has any stamps from Congo.
While the singer tries to talk to Mélie about other things like stars, films, and champions, her obsession with stamps overshadows everything else. She dreams of finding stamps of different places and animals, such as the Titicaca, Tanzania, and the rhinoceros. They travel all around the world, but instead of enjoying the sights and culture, Mélie is only concerned with collecting unobliterated stamp series from various countries' post offices.
Overall, Perret's song speaks to the power of collecting and the passions and obsessions that can drive it. The lyrics of the song highlight how people can become so enveloped in a hobby or passion that it can consume their entire lives, leaving little attention or desire for anything other than their obsession.
